WAYNE, Neb. - The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (15-20, 11-14 NSIC) closed out its longest scheduled road trip of the season with a 13-3 loss in eight innings at Wayne State (20-14, 16-9 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon at Pete Chapman Complex.
The Golden Bears dropped all five games on its 5-game road stand at St. Cloud State and Wayne State this week, and will return to St. Paul this week for a 5-game homestand to open up Barnes Field for the 2025 season, hosting Winona State on Tuesday for a 1:30 doubleheader before an Easter weekend 3-game series with Augustana with a doubleheader on Good Friday followed by a single tilt on Saturday.
Concordia first baseman
Charlie Harms capped off a productive week, going 2-3 with a pair of RBIs. During the road stretch, Harms slashed .333/.429/.611 (6-18) with a triple, homer and nine RBIs in five games.
Koby McBroome earned a bump to the leadoff spot in the series finale with a productive week at the plate, hitting .375/.524/.563 (6-16) with four walks, two runs, a double, triple and two RBIs.
Kaden Johnson had three extra-base hits wiht a double and two home runs, driving in five with a .684 slugging percentage on the week.
The Golden Bears looked to allowed the Wildcats to score in each of the first five innings of play, but the game started off on a different note, as Concordia loaded the bases in the second inning with an
Eric Berg HBP, a
Charlie Harms single and a
Will Husemann walk but came up empty.
After WSC scored two in the first, they added to the lead with a 2-run homer in the second.
Concordia wasn't able to do anything with a pair of 1-out walks from
Kal Brohmer in the first and third innings, with WSC extending the lead to 5-0 with a run in the third inning.
The Golden Bears put two more runners on in the fourth inning with two outs, a single by
Kaden Johnson to the left side and a HBP to Husemann, but left a pair stranded.
The Wildcats doubled their lead for the second time in the game, this time adding a 5-spot to the scoreboard for a decisive 10-0 lead through four innings with three of the runs coming across as unearned.
Concordia broke through in the fifth against the WSC bullpen with Harms coming through with a 2-out, 2-run single through the right side and CSP scored a third run with the benefit of a 2-out WSC error.
The Wildcats tacked on two more in the fifth on a triple, sacrifice fly and solo home run and ended the game with a run in the eighth for the run-rule win.
Concordia's bench produced some late inning hits and loud outs, with
Tomas Lee and
Jeremy McGuigan each picking up 2-out singles in the eighth inning.
Ian Segna took the loss for Concordia, falling to 4-2 on the season, ending a strong run of pitching that included wins in four-straight decisions covering five starts. During the 4-0 stretch, Segna worked 32.0 innings with a 2.25 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 31-6 SO-BB ratio.
Caden Carsen led CSP's bullpen with 2.0 shutout innings, allowing a pair of hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Bennett McCollow added another hit to his resume, hitting safely in four-straight and reaching base in all five games this week.
