TUCSON, Ariz. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team 6-7, 2-2 NSIC) wrapped up its Arizona trip on Sunday evening with a doubleheader sweep of Minot State (5-4, 2-2 NSIC) at Kino Sports Complex.
GAME ONE: CONCORDIA 8, MINOT 2
The Golden Bears struck first in game one when
Eli Nelson laced a double down the left field line to score
Kal Brohmer in the top of the second, but the Beavers added a run of their own in the third to tie the game at 1-1.
Concordia regained the advantage in the fourth when
Kaden Johnson used an RBI single to score Brohmer and make it 2-1.
The Golden Bears took firm control of the game in the fifth, scoring six runs with RBI from
Will Husemann (2), Brohmer, Nelson, and Johnson (2) to make it 8-1. The Beavers managed a single run in the bottom of the fifth, but that proved to be all they could do as CSP hung on for the six-run victory.
Sophomore
Ian Segna pitched a complete game for Concordia, allowing 11 hits but giving up just two runs with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Brohmer finished the game 4-4 at the plate with a triple, an RBI, and a stolen base. Johnson was 2-4 with three RBI while Nelson was 2-4 with two RBI and Husemann was 3-4 with two RBI.
Noah Juliar also had a multi-hit game, going 2-4.
GAME TWO: CONCORDIA 10, MINOT STATE 6
The Golden Bears controlled the early innings of game two, scoring three in the second, one in the third, and six in the fourth to take a commanding 10-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth. Minot State got back into the game with four runs of their own in that inning and added two more in the fifth to pull within four. That was as close as they would come, as the game closed with four straight scoreless frames for both teams.
Senior
Bennett McCollow hit a major career milestone in the game, going 2-5 at the plate to cross the 100-hit mark as a Golden Bear, needing just 64 games played across two seasons at Concordia to accomplish the feat.
Kaden Johnson and
Charlie Harms also had multi-hit games for Concordia, going 2-5 and 2-4, respectively.
Trett Joles finished 1-4 at the plate but made the most of his hit, singling through the right side in the fourth to score both McCollow and
Noah Juliar.
Gavin Rusch made the start on the mound for Concordia, allowing seven hits and six runs, only three of which were earned, while walking two and fanning four.
Ollie Yuhas picked up his first win of the season in relief, allowing just one hit with one strikeout while holding the Beavers scoreless in 1.2 innings of work.
Reece Piontek pitched the final three innings and earned the save, giving up just one hit while punching out three.
Ayden Sauerbrei provided a highlight out of the bullpen for the Beavers, pitching the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings and holding the Golden Bears scoreless with just one hit allowed and five strikeouts.
The Golden Bears will now return home, hosting UMary (4-9, 0-4 NSIC) for a weekend series at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn.
