TUCSON, Ariz. - Paced by eight extra-base hits, two home runs and 21 hits, Concordia-St. Paul (4-5) secured its second-straight victory, defeating Crown College 19-12 in the Tucson Invitational Games at Kino Sports Complex.
Eli Nelson had a breakout performance, going 3-6 with a double, a homer, two runs and five RBIs while
Kaden Johnson went 3-4 with two runs, an RBI and four stolen bases.
Bennett McCollow joined them as one of five Golden Bears to record a 3-hit day, going 3-6 with a double (3), a home run (4) and three runs scored.
Will Husemann also had a 3-hit day, going 3-5, scoring four times while slugging a double and a triple, driving in a pair and drawing a walk while adding a stolen base.
CSP's fifth 3-hit game came off the bat of
Noah Juliar, who was 3-6 with a double (6), three runs and two RBIs, maintaining his .500 average on the season through nine contests.
Juliar and McCollow also extended their on-base streaks, with McCollow pushing his to 23 games and Juliar to 21.
Kal Brohmer (0-4) drew a walk, scored a run, drove in a pair and stole a base while also extending his on-base streak to 20 games. Juliar has hit safely in all nine games on the season including six multi-hit games with a pair of three-hit games and a four-hit game under his belt. McCollow also has six multi-hit games on the season, while Husemann achieved his fourth.
All nine starters either scored or drove in a run and all safely reached base with a hit, walk or hit by pitch.
The game started with each team scoring at least one run in the first five frames, but it was Concordia who was able to put up more crooked innings, scoring three in the first, four in the second, five in the fourth and five in the seventh while Crown only had one inning with more than two runs, a 4-run fourth. Concordia either won or tied every inning except the ninth when it was already a 19-10 game before Crown's 2-out, 2-run single.
It was an important game for the Golden Bear pitching staff, the third-straight day with a game, with one day off before this weekend's NSIC league-opening 4-game series against Minot State. Five Golden Bear hurlers worked at least an inning in the game, with
Andrew Boeser drawing the start and allowing just one run and no hits despite walking three.
Christian Lindow earned the win as the first pitcher to enter, taking over a 7-1 game and carrying two frames into a 13-3 lead. He struck out four in two innings, allowing two runs on two hits without walking anyone.
Cooper Mollet excelled in the middle innings, allowing one unearned run while striking out four of his 10 batters faced in the fifth and sixth innings, giving up just one hit and no walks.
Miles Jensen carried the final three frames, striking out six of his 16 batters while allowing four runs on four hits and two walks.
