Golden Bears suffer first conference losses to Winona State

CSP swept on Wednesday afternoon in Winona

WINONA, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (12-19, 4-2 NSIC) fell to Winona State (24-7, 6-1 NSIC) on Wednesday afternoon, 13-3 and 10-1. Freshman Ava Blake had the most hits for the Golden Bears on the day with three and scored a run. 

Alexis Monty had the only extra-base hit for the Golden Bears on the day with an RBI double. She tallied two hits total. Lily Burke also had two hits including a 2RBI single in the first game. 

Rachel Novak tallied two hits with an RBI in the second game. Sydney Pelzer also tallied two hits in game two. 

Tatum Dunlavy pitched four innings in game one throwing a team-high three strikeouts. Makayla Wigern pitched three innings in game two allowing a team-low three hits and three runs. 

The Golden Bears are back in action this weekend at Carlander Field against Northern State (S.D.) (7-20, 1-5 NSIC) on Friday and MSU Moorhead (10-23, 2-4 NSIC) on Saturday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Stay tuned to cspbears.com for potential changes. 

Game One
Winona State scored four runs in the opening inning off of three home runs. CSP struck back in the bottom of the second inning. Katie Klotz walked, Blake singled and Ella Arendt walked to load the bases with two outs. 

Burke brought in two runs with an RBI single up the middle. Monty was then hit by pitch, loading the bases once again. The Golden Bears couldn't find anything after that to trail 4-2. 

Winona State immediately responded with a two-run home run in the next inning. CSP had runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the third inning, but had two straight fielders' choices to get out the lead runners. The Golden Bears stranded loaded bases once again after Blake was hit by pitch. 

The Warriors added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to lead, 8-2. Monty hit an RBI double in the sixth inning, cutting the lead to 8-3. The game went off the rails in the seventh inning with the Warriors scoring five runs to win, 13-3.

Burke led the team with a hit and two RBIs. Monty tallied a hit and an RBI. Novak and Blake recorded hits and senior Morgan Medlo smacked her first hit of the season too. 

Erica McCullough picked up the loss after starting the game. She allowed six runs on six hits and one walk while throwing one strikeout. Dunlavy pitched the final four innings allowing seven runs on seven hits with seven walks. The freshman tallied a team-high three strikeouts on the day. 

Winona State was led by Alyssa Woelfel with four hits including two home runs, a double and three RBIs. Izzy Howe pitched all seven innings picking up her 12th win of the season and throwing four strikeouts. 

The Golden Bears were outhit 13-5 and had the only error of the game. Both teams struck out four times. CSP left nine runners on base while Winona State left 10. The Warriors tallied five home runs as a team. 

Game Two
The Warriors once again struck early with four singles and a sacrifice fly in the opening inning to score two runs. In the second inning, the Warriors hit two home runs, a double, a single and a sacrifice fly to lead 7-0. 

Riley Rosenthal and Pelzer singled in the third inning. Novak brought in Rosenthal with an RBI single for CSP's lone run of the contest. 

Kiley Slaats hit a three-run homer for Winona State in the top of the fifth inning to lead, 10-1. The Golden Bears threatened to keep the game going with two singles in the fifth inning, but could not convert them into any runs. 

Pelzer and Blake each tallied two hits for CSP. The Golden Bears were only outhit 11-10, but did not record any extra-base hits. Winona State had four extra-base hits with three home runs. The Warriors finished the day hitting eight home runs between the two games. 

Emmy Bowne picked up the loss for CSP after starting the game. She allowed seven runs on eight hits in two innings. Wigern pitched the final three innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. 

Jayda Berg pitched her 11th win of the season for Winona State. She allowed one run with three strikeouts and did not walk a CSP batter. 

Slaats tallied two hits with four RBIs. Woelfel hit another home run with three RBIs. The sophomore finished the day with three home runs and six RBIs. 

The Golden Bears committed three errors. CSP left nine runners on base while Winona left six runners on base.
