Golden Bears head to Sioux Falls to face Minnesota Crookston

CSP and UMC will play 4-game series on Thursday and Friday at Sanford Sports Complex

3.26.25

ST. PAUL, Minn. – As natural grass baseball fields slowly round into form in late March in the Upper Midwest, the challenging conditions have led to a change in site for this weekend's 4-game NSIC baseball series between host Minnesota Crookston (9-13, 6-6 NSIC) and Concordia-St. Paul (10-12, 6-6 NSIC).

The series will now be played in two days with doubleheaders on Thursday starting at 1 p.m. and Friday starting at noon, with the site shifting to Sioux Falls, South Dakota at Sanford Sports Complex, a 500-acre campus featuring five FieldTurf baseball fields.

The games will be streamed on the NSIC Network and feature live in-game statistics to follow along online.

LAST WEEKEND: MINNETONKA SWEEP
Concordia rebounded from a 4-game skid at Minnetonka High School's Veterans Field against UMary two weeks ago with a 4-game sweep of Northern State last weekend. The 4-game NSIC sweep was the first in head coach Neil Lerner's career, now in his sixth season leading the program.

Of course, during Lerner's tenure, the NSIC has shifted away from 4-game series throughout the duration of the season, as CSP has collected four 3-game series sweeps in Lerner's career.

Concordia's last 4-game NSIC series sweep, coincidentally, was against this weekend's opponent Minnesota Crookston in 2018, also played at Veterans Field in Minnetonka (3/17-18).

The big weekend vaulted CSP into a 3-way tie with Winona State and Minnesota Crookston in the NSIC standings at 6-6, with the trio sitting just one game out of a 6-way tie for third as SMSU, Minot State, UMD, UMary, Wayne State and St. Cloud State all boast 7-5 records in what has been a wide open start to the NSIC race.

Over the weekend, Concordia hit .340 (36-106) with a .470 OBP and .472 slugging (.942 OPS) while holding Northern State's bats to a .189/.302/.234 (21-111) slash and a .536 OPS.

The Golden Bears outscored Northern State 28-8, and CSP's pitching staff had a 1.50 earned run average, 1.13 WHIP and a 29-13 SO-BB ratio in 30.0 innings.

Further, Concordia's weekend starting rotation each worked 6.0 innings, and all four allowed two earned runs or less.

The lineup had four players hit .417 or better and six players hit .333 or better.

SERIES HISTORY: CSP 49, UMC 20
The Golden Bears and Golden Eagles have met 69 times since Concordia joined the NSIC in the 2000 NSIC baseball season. UMC won six of the first nine contests between the programs before Concordia took control of the series, winning 43-straight games from 2003 to 2018.

Since 2019, UMC has reversed the trend, though, by picking up wins in 14 of the last 17 contests. Concordia's win in game four of last season's series played in Beatrice, Nebraska snapped UMC's 6-game winning streak in the series.

Head coach Neil Lerner holds a 3-11 record against the Golden Eagles. The two teams have met at neutral fields 25 times, with UMC holding a slight 13-12 edge.

The last time the teams met on one of two campuses was April 10-11, 2021 in Crookston, and the last time UMC has been to Barnes Field was April 15, 2014. Concordia is 37-7 in games played on one of the home campuses.
