Golden Bears open GLIAC play with season-high margin of victory over Cardinals

Nine players found the net in the victory

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team tallied a season-high margin of victory in a 18-3 win over the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State in the GLIAC conference opener at Robert C. Braddock Field Friday afternoon in University Center, Mich. 

The Golden Bears were led by a high-powered offensive performance that saw nine players score including a trio of players record a hat-trick. 

Susie Monson, Sydney Smith and Shelby Hansen all recorded three goals in the victory with Kaci Kotscvar, Kaysawn Carlson and Erin Chartier who each tallied a pair of goals. 

As a team, the Navy and Gold rifled off 41 shots which is the seventh most in program history in a single game while setting a new program record with 45 ground balls. 

The game was all CSP from start to finish with the Golden Bears starting the game on a 17-0 scoring run that saw them not allow a goal in the first three quarters of play. 

It was Sydney Smith who saw the first goal of the day with an assist by Jenna Hamann within the first 45 seconds of the first quarter. 

Kotschevar, Smith, Carlson and Sara Kaiser each scored a goal in the first quarter to give Concordia the 5-0 lead after one. 

Susie Monson scored the first goal of the second quarter three minutes in to keep the scoring party going. 

Shelby Hansen scored her first goal of the game two minutes later to bring the Golden Bears up 7-0. 

Another scoring effort from Smith and Kaiser added another pair of goals to keep the Cardinals locked out of the game. 

Jenna Hamann scored her third goal of the season with five minutes remaining in the second quarter to add just another Navy and Gold offensive weapon into the mix. 

Erin Chartier scored her first goal of the day four minutes later to send Concordia into the break up 12-0. 

Coming out from halftime, CSP showed no signs of slowing down with goals from Hansen and a back-to-back pair of goals from Monson to go up 14-0. 

Chartier and Carlson each added another goal to end the third quarter with the Golden Bears up 16-0 with Saginaw Valley State having no answers. 

Kennedy Bolander scored her sixth goal of the season to add the first goal of the fourth quarter and once again extend the lead 17-0. 

Two minutes later the Cardinals were finally able to break through the CSP defense and score their first goal of the day and end the 49-minute scoring drought. 

Kotschevar responded two minutes later with her second goal of the day and seventh of the season. 

Saginaw was able to score back-to-back goals for the first time in the game to end the game with a final score of 18-3. 

Monson scored her third hat-trick of the season, 12th of her career while adding an assist, two ground balls and two draw controls to show a remarkable outing. 

Smith recorded her third hat-trick of the season in the victory while accumulating three ground balls and an assist. 

Hansen collected her second hat-trick of the season along with one ground ball and two caused turnovers to add just another star to a star-studded day. 

Claire Flahaven shined on the defense, tallying five ground balls, two caused turnovers while making herself known on offense with her second career assist and three draw controls. 

Katie Colleran started in the net for the Golden Bears where she recorded six saves to bring her season total to 30 while allowing no goals. Marge Lucio came in for relief in the fourth quarter. 

The Navy and Gold totaled 41 shots to the Cardinals 16 with 33 coming on goal. 

The Golden Bears will look to keep the momentum going when they return to home field next Friday to take on the No. 10 ranked Lakers of Grand Valley State in the Concordia Dome at 6 p.m.
