Golden Bear softball picks up first win at THE Spring Games in Florida

Dana, Monty and Klotz each smack home runs; Pelzer bats a thousand on the day

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (2-10) picked up its first win at THE Spring Games on Sunday. The Golden Bears defeated Califonia University of Pennsylvania (2-7) in five innings, 9-1. CSP fell, 8-3, earlier in the day to Grand Valley State (Mich.) (5-7).

Bryleigh Dana tallied her first-career home run and hit a team-high four RBIs. Alexis Monty and Katie Klotz each added a home run as well. Monty also tallied a double and three RBIs. 

Senior Sydney Pelzer batted 1.000 on the day. She tallied three hits including two doubles and three walks. Pelzer leads the team with five doubles this season. 

Rachel Novak smacked two hits with a triple and an RBI. Ava Blake tallied two hits with an RBI as well. Riley Rosenthal and Emily Knoblauch each had a hit and an RBI. 

Tatum Dunlavy picked up the win against the Vulcans. She tallied a 1.40 ERA pitching all five innings while only giving up four hits, one earned run and one walk. She also tallied a strikeout. 

Concordia-St. Paul is back in action on Monday to face Franklin Pierce (N.H.) (2-2) at 1 p.m. and Lynn (Fla.) (6-10) at 3:15 p.m. Sunday's games started a three-day stretch of doubleheaders for CSP as they play on Tuesday too. 

CSP vs Grand Valley State
Dana got the scoring started in the second inning. After Pelzer singled to start the inning, Dana hit a two-out homer to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 advantage. This marked the first home run of the sophomore's career. 

The Lakers responded in the bottom of the inning. After a walk, Madelynn Pope hit a two-out triple to score the first run. On the next at-bat, Eliana Eiland singled up the middle to tie the game at 2-2. 

The game remained tied until the Lakers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Grand Valley State used two singles, a double and two CSP errors to score the runs. The Lakers added a run in the bottom of the fifth off a double and a single to lead, 8-2. 

CSP added its third and final run in the sixth inning. Pelzer walked and Rosenthal hit a bunt single to start the inning. Novak brought Pelzer to third on a fielder's choice and Dana hit a sacrifice fly into centerfield to bring her home. 

Pelzer led the team with two hits including a double and two runs scored. Dana finished with three RBIs. Rosenthal, Novak and Knoblauch recorded a hit. 

Pope led the Lakers with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Nevaeh Ingram pitched the entire game giving up three earned runs and striking out five batters. This was her third win of the season. 

Erica McCullough led CSP on the mound pitching four innings. She gave up three earned runs with two walks and a strikeout. Emmy Bowne pitched two innings giving up three hits and one earned run while throwing two strikeouts.

Grand Valley State outhit CSP 10-6. Both teams committed two errors. The Lakers left eight runners on base while the Golden Bears left six runners on base. 

CSP vs California University of Pennsylvania
Monty struck first hitting a solo homer on the opening at-bat of the game for the Golden Bears in the bottom of the first. The Vulcans tied the game in the first at-bat of the second inning as Kaitlyn Achtermeier hit a solo homer. It was all CSP the rest of the way. 

Novak was hit by pitch and stole second base in the next half-inning. After she advanced to third on a wild pitch, Dana hit her second sacrifice fly of the day to bring her home. In the fourth inning, Blake walked and Pelzer was hit by pitch to get on base. Rosenthal hit a sacrifice fly and Novak smacked a triple to bring in two more runs and lead, 4-1. 

The floodgates opened in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with a Lily Burke walk and a Monty double to bring her home. Blake hit an RBI single, Pelzer hit an RBI double and Klotz hit a two-run homer to lead, 9-1. This marked the first home run of Klotz's career. 

The Golden Bears caught three outfield flyouts in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Dunlavy picked up her second win of the season pitching all five innings. Monty led the team with three RBIs. 

Concordia outhit the Vulcans 7-4. CSP committed the only two errors of the game. California (Penn.) left six runners on base while the Golden Bears left four runners on base.
