LOGANSPORT, Ind. - On Sunday, it was Tiffin University (Ohio) who produced the fireworks with runners on base, but on Monday Concordia-St. Paul (1-2) provided the power with runners on base in a 13-11 win for the Golden Bears over the Dragons (3-2) at Logansport High School.
Concordia jumped out for the first lead when
Koby McBroome hit a bases loaded triple to right field with two outs in the second inning. In a big fifth inning, Concordia expanded on its 7-5 lead on
Kaden Johnson's 1-out, 2-run double to left. A hit by pitch, fly out and fielder's choice brought
Noah Juliar to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded, with the senior produced a grand slam to left to blow the game open for a 13-5 lead. Those were CSP's only two opportunities with the bases loaded, with McBroome and Juliar delivering maximum results.
Tiffin, meanwhile, would only go 1-4 with a walk with the bases loaded, scoring their second and third runs of the game in the third inning to tie the game at three.
After McBroome's 3-run triple in the second, Tiffin would tie the game with a 3-run third inning, but
Bennett McCollow led off the bottom of the frame with a homer to left and Concordia never relinquished the lead from there.
McBroome was 1-2 with a pair of walks, a pair of stolen bases, two runs and three RBIs from the leadoff spot. Juliar was 3-5 on the day, adding a pair of singles to his grand slam and scoring twice. From the bottom of the lineup, Johnson turned the lineup over in a big way, going 1-3 with two walks, scoring twice and driving in a pair.Â
After not having anyone with a multi-hit game in Sunday's doubleheader, Concordia had four multi-hit games on Monday, with McCollow (2-5, HR, 2 R, RBI),
Trett Joles (2-4, 2 R, RBI, SB) and
Eric Berg (2-5, 2B, R) each joining Juliar.Â
Concordia pounded out 11 hits and drew six walks, adding three more HBP on the day.Â
Golden Bear starter
Reece Piontek worked into the fifth inning in his first start of the season, allowing four runs on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out four.
Andrew Boeser secured the relief win, coming on with one out in the fifth and a runner on second base to protect a 7-3 lead. All four of Boeser's outs in his 1.1 inning appearance were strikeouts.Â
Boeser turned a 13-8 lead over to
Ollie Yuhas with two outs and a runner on second base in the sixth inning, with Yuhas promptly getting out of the inning before working a scoreless seventh. He gave way to
Christian Lindow with two outs in the eighth, with Lindow protecting a 13-11 lead by retiring the last four batters of the game in order for the save.Â
Steven Sexton took the loss for Tiffin, falling to 0-1, allowing three runs in the bottom of the third inning.Â
After using the long ball to pickup the sweep on Sunday, Concordia's four pitchers kept the Dragons in the park as 11 of their 14 hits were singles, with the other three being doubles.Â
It's a short turnaround for Concordia, who will head to Maryville, Missouri this Thursday, Friday and Saturday for a three-game series at Northwest Missouri State (4-7), who was swept over the weekend at #13 Missouri Southern State in Joplin, taking the Lions to 12 innings in the series opener before allowing 12 runs in game two (12-7) and a 13-run loss in the finale (16-3, 7 innings).Temperatures will range from the low 50s to mid 60s during CSP's visit to Maryville with little-to-no chance of precipitation and winds in the 13-18mph vicinity.Â
