ST. PAUL, Minn. - Lydia Haack scored a career-high 35 points in No. 12 Concordia-St. Paul's (24-2, 18-2 NSIC) 62-53 victory over MSU Moorhead (12-14, 10-10 NSIC). The Golden Bears held the Dragons to two points in the fourth quarter while shooting 0-11 from the field.
With the victory, Concordia-St. Paul finishes 14-0 at home in the regular season. This ties for the most home wins in a season with 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2013-14. This is only the second time in program history the Golden Bears have finished unbeaten at home (2004-05).
The Golden Bears trailed 49-37 with 5:29 left in the third quarter, MSU Moorhead's largest lead in the game. After that CSP outscored the Dragons 25-4 to finish the game. Haack scored 16 of the game's final 25 points.
Haack was 13-22 (59.1%) from the field and 8-9 (88.9%) from the free-throw line. She grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and had two steals. The 35 points ties for the fifth-most in a game in school history. Her previous career-high was 30 points last weekend vs. Sioux Falls and in 2021 vs. St. Cloud State when she played at Upper Iowa. Haack has scored 121 points in her last five games (24.2 ppg average).
The junior guard scored eight straight points in the third quarter, before MSU Moorhead made a layup with 1:46 left in the third period. That ended up being the MSU Moorhead's final made field goal. The Dragons made their final free throws with 7:55 left to take a 53-47 lead. During that stretch, the Dragons went 0-9 while the Golden Bears blocked two shots and had two steals.
Leah Dengerud got a key offensive rebound and putback to start the Golden Bears' final 13-0 run. Julia Bengtson hit a free throw and Haack made a layup to cut the lead down to one point. After that, Ashley Schuelke drove baseline and found Lindsey Becher open in the middle of the paint for the go-ahead layup. That gave CSP a 54-53 lead with 4:05 left.
Two Dragon turnovers led to layups by Bengtson and Haack to take a 58-53 lead. After that, the Golden Bears went 4-6 (66.7%) from the line down the stretch to seal the victory. CSP outscored MSU Moorhead 17-2 in the final period of play.
The first half was back-and-forth, with CSP obtaining a 19-15 lead after the first quarter. Concordia scored the first four points of the second quarter to take a 23-15 lead, which was its largest until the final score. After that, MSU Moorhead went on a 12-2 run for a 27-25 advantage and eventually led 34-32 at halftime.
The Dragons came out firing in the second half, hitting three 3-pointers to aid an 11-2 run. This helped them take a 45-36 lead midway through the quarter. The Dragons made five more 3-pointers than the Golden Bears in the game.
Bengtson added 10 points shooting 4-7 (57.1%) from the field. She also grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists and had two steals. Becher added five points and a team-high nine rebounds. She also blocked four shots, bringing her total to 20 in the last four games.
Schuelke scored four points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. She also blocked a career-high three shots. Lauren Wilson scored three points with a team-high three steals. Megan Gamble added two points, two steals and eight rebounds. Mikayla Kanenwisher had a point and a steal.
MSU Moorhead was led by Natalie Jens with 12 points and Karlee Fisher with 11 points. Ashley Fritz had nine points off the bench. Terryn Johnson scored eight points with seven rebounds.
Concordia-St. Paul finished 23-54 (42.6%) from the field and 2-14 (42.3%) from behind the arc. That is the least amount of 3-pointers and the third-lowest field goals CSP has made in a game this season. Concordia was 14-21 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.
MSU Moorhead finished the game shooting 20-56 (35.7%) from the field, 7-21 (33.3%) from behind the arc and 6-6 (100%) from the free-throw line. The Dragons shot 20-45 (44.4%) from the field and 7-16 (43.7%) on 3-pointers in the first three quarters.
CSP outscored MSU Moorhead 38-24 in the paint and 20-18 off of turnovers. Both teams had 35 rebounds. The Dragons had 19 turnovers while the Golden Bears had 14. Concordia had 10 assists, which is the third-lowest total this season.
The Golden Bears honored their four seniors in Becher, Bengtson, Gamble and Kanenwisher before the game for Senior Day. All four seniors started the game.
This is the most regular season wins for the Golden Bears since 2007-08's 25-2 record. The 2003-04 team also finished the regular season 25-2. The Golden Bears have the opportunity next weekend to surpass those marks with 26 regular season wins for the top spot in program history.
CSP has won 15 straight home games, surpassing 2004-06's 14 straight home wins. This now ranks as the third-longest home-winning streak in program history. 2006-08's 23-game winning streak is the top mark in program history and 2001-03's 18-game winning streak is second.
No. 17 Southwest Minnesota State (24-2, 18-2 NSIC) defeated Minnesota Crookston (9-17, 7-13 NSIC) on Saturday night, 88-74. The Mustangs remain tied with the Golden Bears for first place in the NSIC. Southwest Minnesota State is on the road against UMary (14-10, 11-9 NSIC) and Northern State (16-10, 13-7 NSIC) next weekend.
No. 25 Minnesota State (21-5, 17-3 NSIC) remains one game behind CSP and SMSU. The Mavericks defeated UMary 91-75 on Saturday. Northern State and Sioux Falls (16-11, 12-8 NSIC) are battling for the final bye next weekend in the 12-team NSIC Tournament.
Concordia-St. Paul is in action on the road on Friday, Feb. 21 against Bemidji State (6-18, 4-16 NSIC) at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Bears then play Minnesota Crookston on the road at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21.
