Schuelke sinks season-high 21 points as Golden Bears surge past Wildcats

Four Golden Bears tallied double digits en route to a road win over Wayne State.

WAYNE, Neb. — The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a 69-59 road win over Wayne State Thursday night. The Golden Bears have now won each of their last six meetings with the Wildcats dating back to February of 2023.

Four Golden Bears tallied double digit point totals in the win, Ashley Schuelke led the way with a season high 21 points. The junior guard was efficient all night long, going 7-of-8 from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point range and 5-of-5 at the free throw line.

Lauren Wilson recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds, while tallying 3 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal. Wilson was 5-of-9 shooting on the day and 6-of-11 at the charity stripe.

Senior guard Lauren Feddema put up a career-high 15 points off the bench, besting her previous high of 12 set on Jan. 14, 2024 against Bemidji State. Feddema was 4-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, while grabbing 5 boards in a season-high 31 minutes on the court.

Lydia Haack put up 10 points in the win, going 2-of-4 from three with 2 assists on the night.

As a team the Golden Bears were 23-of-56 (41.1%) shooting on the night, while holding the Wildcats to 20-of-56 (35.7%) from the floor. From beyond the arc, CSP was 6-0f-18 (33.3%) shooting to Wayne's 7-of-24 (29.2%).

Schuelke's first three-point bucket of the night put the Golden Bears ahead 8-2 near the midway mark of the first. Wayne State tied things at 11 later in the quarter, with the Wildcats holding a slim one point lead at the end of the first.

CSP opened things up in the second quarter, using a 13-0 run to take a 28-15 lead. Lauren Feddema hit from deep to extend the Concordia lead to 14 later in the quarter, as the Golden Bears carried a 31-19 advantage into the break.

Wayne State came out firing in the third, cutting the CSP lead to just five at the 6:33 mark. But a pair of Shuelke layups brought it back to a 10 point Concordia advantage with four and a half to play in the period.

Holding a five point lead going into the final period of play, the Golden Bears closed things out shooting 72% from the floor in the fourth. Lauren Feddema drilled a three pointer to extend the lead to 13 with 1:32 to play, putting the finishing touches on a 69-59 win.

CSP came away with the advantage on the glass, outrebounding Wayne State 39-34. On defense the Golden Bears forced 20 Wildcat turnovers, capitalizing on those miscues with 23 points off turnovers. Concordia had the advantage inside as well, with 32 points in the paint to Wayne's 22.

The Golden Bears will look to end 2025 on a high note Saturday afternoon Dec. 20, against Augustana. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
