ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's soccer team (12-3-3, 9-3-3 NSIC) defeated the Warriors of Winona State 3-1 to finish their regular-season strong on senior night at Sea Foam Stadium.
10 seniors were honored pre-game tonight for their incredible contributions to CSP soccer including, Kayla Matuzak, Olivia Lovell, Jada Cannady, Caroline Lauinger, Ashley Bennett, Nicole Moore, Sophia King, McKayla Stockness, Belle Abruzzo and Clare Snapko.
Sophia Haase played hero for the sixth time this season, scoring the game-winner to send her to top-three in game-winning goals in NCAA Division II while also leading the team with eight shots.
Bellis on the win, "We played some very nice stuff tonight and carved out some spaces through Winona's back line - it was a terrific send-off for our seniors."
In the first half, CSP got off to a quick start, tallying five shots before freshman Brooke Nelson got the squad on the board. She was assisted on the play by senior Sophia King in the 16th-minute.
Now under pressure, the Warriors needed new legs on the pitch, making seven substitutions to keep the Golden Bears defense checked in. A corner kick to put the ball in play gave Faith Quinn the chance to make a quick pass to Madison Barnick who kicked a perfectly placed ball to the back of the net to even the score.
With their fire reignited, the Navy and Gold would hold steady possession with three shots before a corner kick would set up their next opportunity. Clare Snapko sent a shot flying from the corner to which Haase headed the ball spiraling past the WSU goalkeeper to get back on top in the 38th-minute.
Two shots from Concordia would round out the first half, giving CSP the 13-1 shot advantage.
Coming out from the break, both sides wanted to make a move and would exchange shots as they raced for possession.
The Winona State offense stayed fast on their toes trying to get the score back in their favor but the Golden Bears defense had an answer at each turn.
In the 81st-minute a free kick attempt for Belle Abruzzo would send the ball hurdling through the offensive zone, landing in front of senior Jada Cannady who sent it straight into the net to extend the Navy and Gold's lead 3-1.
One final shot for the Warriors would not be enough and give the Golden Bears their third straight win to end the regular-season.
Concordia held the final shot-advantage 21-9 while limiting Winona State to just six shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Kayla Mutuzak got her fifth start of the season in net before junior Sydney Potter came in for the second half. Potter made two saves to bring her season total to 40 and earned her eighth win of the season.
Leading the CSP defense was Clare Snapko and Belle Abruzzo who each logged a full 90-minute outing on the pitch where they both recorded an assist with Abruzzo registering three shots.
The Golden Bears will return to action on Monday for the NSIC Soccer Tournament Quarterfinals match where they will face the Beavers of Minot State in Minot, N.D. Game details will be announced in the coming days, head to
