ST. PAUL, Minn. — Behind a double-double effort from Emma Mommsen the No.11 Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team cruised to an 88-42 exhibition win over the St. Kate's Wildcats at the Gangelhoff Center Thursday night.
The junior center was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor recording 11 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Lydia Haack tallied 19 points, with four assists and three rebounds, shooting 9-for-15 from the field.
As a team the Golden Bears shot 35-79 (44%), while limiting the Wildcats to 15-55 (27.3%). The CSP defense was suffocating all night long forcing 22 turnovers and grabbing 49 boards.
While Mommsen led the rebounding effort, it was Haack blitzing the Wildcats with five steals, managing an offense that committed just six turnovers.
The aggressive defense led to margins of 29-7 off turnovers and 22-2 on the fastbreak, while the inside play featured margins of 16-8 on second-chance points and 48-16 in the paint.
Concordia jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and never relinquished it, later extending the lead to 11 on a three-pointer from Lydia Haack. The Golden Bears held a 19-11 lead at the end of one quarter of play.
Leah Dengerud nailed a three-ball of her own at the start of the second quarter to open up a nine-point lead. CSP further solidified their control in the second period, capping off a 31-point quarter with a 20-2 run to head into the half up 50-19.
The Golden Bears picked up right where they left off to start the second half, when Ashley Schuelke drilled a shot from beyond the arc to go up 53-19. The sophomore recorded 14 points and seven assists on the night while shooting 50% from the field.
A Lydia Haack fastbreak layup extended the CSP lead to 36, and Avery Moeller knocked down a three to open up a 67-25 lead. As the Golden Bears held a 70-30 lead through three quarters of play.
Lauren Feddema added six points of her own off the bench, including a driving layup midway through the fourth quarter to go up 76-34. Cassidy Pitzl and Cierra Kortan knocked down a pair of three-point jumpers in the waning minutes of the game to put the finishing touches on a 46-point Golden Bears win.
Forward Lauren Wilson was one of four Golden Bears to tally double-digit points on the night. The junior recorded 10 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists, In total 12 Golden Bears found the scoresheet with Lauren Feddema and Avery Moeller each providing six points off the bench.
Concordia's bench outscored St. Kate's bench 29-16 including an 18-8 margin in the fourth quarter.
Hattie Fox was the Wildcats leading scorer with 10 points on the night, the guard went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, while also grabbing 11 boards.
The Golden Bears will now look ahead to regular season play, as they head down to St. Joseph, Missouri for the Central Region Showcase. No. 11 Concordia will take on No. 9 Fort Hays State at Civic Arena on Friday, Nov. 14, tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
