Golden Bears stay hot with sweep of UMary

Concordia secures its fifth consecutive sweep

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The No. 10 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (16-4, 12-1 NSIC) extended its winning streak to five matches with a dominant 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-13, 25-19) over the University of Mary (6-15, 3-10 NSIC) on Friday evening at the Gangelhoff Center.

The Golden Bears continued their strong form at home, improving to 7-0 in matches at the Gangelhoff Center this season. The win also improved Concordia's all-time record against UMary to 27-0, including 24 sweeps.

As a unit, CSP hit .298 on the night with 42 kills against just 11 errors on 104 total swings, while limiting the Marauders to a .066 hitting percentage. The Bears also owned the service line with 10 aces compared to four for Mary and out-blocked the visitors nine to four.

The two teams played to a 9-9 tie early in the opening set with each squad spending time with the lead, but Concordia found a spark on the serve of senior Natalee Rolbiecki with a run of seven straight points to take a commanding 16-9 advantage. The Marauders never recovered from that point as CSP cruised to a comfortable 25-15 set win.

Concordia started hot in the second set, winning the first five points and going on to carve out an early 12-3 lead. The Marauders never managed to cut the deficit below seven points for the remainder of the set as the Golden Bears claimed another dominant victory by a score of 25-13.

CSP led early in the third set once again with a four-point run giving the Bears a 6-2 advantage, but a 5-0 run by the Marauders followed to give Umary the lead at 7-6. The teams jockeyed for the lead in the following rallies, with the Marauders clinging to a late 19-18 lead. The Golden Bears captured all the momentum to close the set, winning seven straight points punctuated by back-to-back kills from junior Mehlayna Straub with Josie Tingelhoff at the service line to claim the set 25-19 and complete the sweep.

Sophomore outside hitter Makenna Nold paced the offense with 14 kills on .364 hitting while adding 11 digs and three blocks for a match-high 16.5 points. In 20 matches played this season, Nold has now logged nine double-doubles.

Straub delivered nine kills at a .412 hitting clip, tacking on six block assists and two aces for 14 total points. Freshman Kaelyn Snoozy contributed seven kills, two digs, and two blocks, while sophomore Kelsey Cooper chipped in seven kills and two digs.

The Golden Bears' setting tandem of Audrey Waterman and Reagan Hickey combined for 37 assists, with Waterman registering 19 assists and four blocks and Hickey adding 18 assists and three digs. Cassie Sieling set a new season high for a three-set match with 21 digs, also chipping in four service aces. Senior Natalee Rolbiecki tallied 12 digs and two aces.
