SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The No. 10 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (17-4, 13-1 NSIC) continued its home dominance with a commanding sweep of Minot State (3-20, 1-13 NSIC) by scores of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-19 on Saturday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center.
With the victory, the Golden Bears improved to 8-0 at home this season and continued their momentum with a sixth consecutive victory, all of which have been sweeps. The win also improved CSP's all-time record against Minot State to 17-0, including a mark of 8-0 at the Gangelhoff Center.
CSP hit an impressive .385 on the afternoon with 48 kills and just 11 errors on 96 total swings while holding the Beavers to a .121 hitting percentage. Concordia also posted six service aces and six total blocks, compared to three aces and two blocks for Minot State.
Sophomore outside hitter
Makenna Nold once again led the Golden Bears' attack, racking up 17 kills on .464 hitting, her second-best hitting clip of the season, while adding five digs and three block assists for a match-high 20.5 points. Freshman
Kaelyn Snoozy also turned in a strong performance with 12 kills on .476 efficiency, chipping in three digs and a block. Junior
Mehlayna Straub added eight kills at a .353 clip, and sophomore
Kelsey Cooper contributed seven kills, four digs, and an ace.
Setters
Audrey Waterman and
Reagan Hickey guided the offense efficiently, combining for 39 assists. Waterman recorded 20 assists, a pair of solo blocks, and one dig, while Hickey added 19 assists and four digs. Defensively,
Cassie Sieling paced the back row with 15 digs and three aces. Senior
Natalee Rolbiecki added eight digs in the sweep.
In the opening set, CSP used an 8-0 burst to jump out to a quick lead behind Sieling's strong serving to build an 8-2 cushion. Another seven-point run by the Bears on the serve of Nold shortly after made it 15-3, and Concordia retained firm control the rest of the way, eventually claiming a 25-12 set win.
The Golden Bears maintained their offensive rhythm early in set two, using a run of eight straight points, including five kills from Snoozy, to take a 15-5 advantage. The Beavers clawed back to within five as they trailed 23-18, but that was all they could do as Concordia hung on for a 25-19 set win. The Golden Bears hit .395 as a team with 21 kills in the set while limiting the Beavers to 10 kills on .286 hitting.
Set three saw several lead changes early, with the teams tied eight times before CSP broke away late with a run of six points in the span of seven serves to take a 20-15 lead. The Beavers won the following two points to cut the deficit to three, but that was as close as it would get as Concordia went on to win by a score of 25-19 yet again to finish off the sweep.
For Minot State, Jasmin Bell led the way with seven kills while Emily Willis and Caton Pearcy tallied six each with Pearcy also adding a team-high nine digs. Setter Jaina Macaulay dished out 13 assists, and Logan Drennan added nine.
The Golden Bears will head west next weekend for matches at No. 22 Northern State (S.D.) on Friday and Jamestown (N.D.) on Saturday.
