Golden Bears fall 3-0 on the road in conference opener

CSP will return to action Sunday to face Winona State

MANKATO, Minn. -  The Concordia- St. Paul soccer team (2-1-2) dropped their NSIC conference opener 3-0 against the #22 ranked Mavericks of Minnesota State (2-1-2) on Friday evening at The Pitch.

Following the loss, Head Coach Steve Bellis stated, "A very tough road game for us today versus a strong side.

Bellis added, "We are very disappointed we couldn't get going to our recent standards and hope we can bounce back on Sunday."

CSP struggled getting their offense going with the Mavericks defense holding them to just five shots the entirety of the game.

Amaya O'Hearn led the offense for the Golden Bears getting three out of the five shots.

In the first half, CSP allowed back-to-back goals that put them in a deficit going into the half.

At the 75th minute, MSU scored their third goal to put a comeback out of reach for Concordia.

The Mavericks were able to hold a 14-5 shot advantage and locked down the Golden Bears on both sides of the ball.

Junior Kayla Matuzak got her fourth start of year in the net where she faced a season-high 14 shots. She recorded two saves on the day bringing her season total to 11.

The Golden Bears will look to bounce back on Sunday where they play the Warriors of Winona State at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium at Maxwell Field in Winona, Minnesota. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
