Nadolney’s grand slam highlights baseball’s 18-13 shootout victory against Malone

Noah Juliar and Nick Thimsen also homered for the Golden Bears

TUCSON, Ariz. - Mason Nadolney's grand slam highlighted Concordia-St. Paul baseball's (10-2) wild 18-13 and second consecutive win against Malone (Ohio) (3-9) on Wednesday at the Kino Sports Complex.

The Golden Bears and Pioneers will meet one last time at the TIG Sports Tucson Invitational tomorrow morning. The first pitch from Kino Sports Fields #6 is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. CT.

As a team, the Golden Bears collected 17 hits, which is the most since the season opener against Newman (Kan) as they also hit the same mark in that game. Despite being outnumbered in hits by two, Concordia had the last laugh after out-scoring the Pioneers by five, bringing the all-time record to 8-3 in favor of CSP.

Nadolney delivered at the plate in a big way for the Golden Bears. The senior third baseman hit his fifth and sixth home runs of the season with a grand slam and a solo shot. He finished the afternoon also with five RBIs, two runs and a walk.

Noah Juliar and Nick Thimsen also collected home runs for the Navy and Gold. Thimsen led the team with six RBIs off his two extra-base hits, while Juliar led the team with four runs scored and added four RBIs and a walk on the afternoon.

On the bump, the Golden Bears' pitching staff was busy with four players seeing playing time. Leo Bustos received the no-decision in his first career start, and Eric Lundell (2-0) picked up his second win on the mound after collecting three strikeouts and walking zero of the 18 batters he faced. Andrew Boeser closed the show on the mound with the final 2.0 innings pitched to collect his first save in the Navy and Gold.

This game was a back-and-forth shootout as both teams combined for 31 runs of 36 hits. After relinquishing the lead fourth, Concordia responded well by outscoring Malone, 10-3, to win their fourth game of the Tucson Invitational.

The scoring all started in the opening inning, where the Golden Bears scored six runs on four hits that were highlighted by a Nadolney grand slam that carried well over the fence in left field to give CSP a five-run cushion.

Malone would not let this keep them down long, as they responded in the second inning with four runs on five hits to cut the Concordia lead to two before eventually tying the game at 6-6 in the third with a pair of runs.

In the fourth, after Bennett McCollow reached safely with a double to right field, Juliar blasted his second home run of the season to left field to put CSP back in front, 8-6. However, the Pioneers responded in the bottom of the inning with a 2-RBI triple and sacrifice fly to take the first and only lead of the contest.

After tying the game with an RBI walk from Juliar, Thimsen added a 2-RBI double to regain the lead in the fifth. Kal Brohmer's sacrifice fly RBI in the next at-bat added the fourth run of the inning, making the score 12-9.

In the later innings, the Golden Bears' offense slowed down with only one run in the seventh following a Thimsen sacrifice fly until they added five insurance runs in the top of the ninth, featured by home runs from Thimsen and Nadolney en route to the 18-13 win.
