CSP drops back-and-forth affair at Rockhurst

Game featured six ties and six lead changes before host Hawks pulled away

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Despite a closely played contest well into the third quarter, Concordia-St. Paul (5-6) didn't have an answer for Rockhurst's (6-3) third quarter run in a 16-12 loss on Sunday afternoon.

The game concludes Concordia's non-conference schedule, as CSP split a 6-game road trip through three states, going 1-1 in Colorado, Ohio, and Missouri.

CSP will turn the page to GLIAC play following a weekend off, hosting Davenport and Grand Valley State on April 5 and 7 at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.

Sunday's game at Rockhurst had an incredibly close start, with the largest lead of two goals held by Rockhurst three times (2-0 in the 1st quarter, 7-5 at half, and 10-8 in the 3rd quarter). The game featured four ties and four lead changes by halftime, with Rockhurst carrying the 7-5 lead into the break despite five caused turnovers and five ground balls by sophomore defender Claire Flahaven in front of a busy freshman goalie Marge Lucio, who had six first half saves.

In the third quarter, Concordia scored the first three goals and appeared to steal the momentum, grabbing an 8-7 lead.

But Rockhurst countered with a decisive run that would seal the game's fate, going on a 7-1 scoring spurt that spanned into the early part of the fourth quarter for a 16-9 lead.

After Rockhurst's decisive run, the ties and lead changes would total six each for the contest.

The Golden Bears would go on another 3-0 scoring run in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time on their comeback attempt.

Flahaven finished off a strong game with six caused turnovers and five ground balls to lead the defense, with Lucio adding 12 saves in the crease. Flahaven's six caused turnovers ties her career-high, which she's reached for the third time this year, tying the school single-game record.

Susie Monson led the offensive attack with a five-point day, scoring four times and adding an assist. Anna Fisher also produced a hat trick, while Hailey Hartlage added three points on a goal and two assists.

Taylor Preece (2g) and Cayla Jungwirth (2a) each had two-point performances, as well.

Rockhurst had four different players record hat tricks led by Dani Mabry's three goals and four assists, and Page Yehling's three goals and two assists.
