Golden Bears to host Cougars and Mustangs at Gangelhoff Center

CSP returns home to face USF on Friday and SMSU on Saturday

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's basketball team (9-14, 4-13 NSIC) returns to Gangelhoff Center for their last full home weekend of the season as they host Sioux Falls (11-11, 8-8 NSIC) on Friday and Southwest Minnesota State (13-9, 10-6 NSIC) on Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Golden Bears fell to Wayne State 79-57 on Friday and Augustana 92-87 on Saturday on the road.
 
On Friday, CSP led by as many as eight in the first half before Wayne State turned the tide in a 79-57 loss. With CSP leading 32-24 with 2:45 to go in the first half, WSC compiled a 39-11 run over the next 12:30 to build the decisive advantage as they made it a season split between the two teams. 
 
Sophomore Reid Patterson provided a bright spot for Concordia as led all players with 22 points, falling just two points shy of his career best set earlier this season at SMSU. He knocked down 7-15 from the floor and 6-12 from beyond the arc while pulling down three boards in 33 minutes of action. Ben Kopetzki and Marcus Skeete gave the Golden Bears three players in double figures as Kopetzki put up 14 points and four assists while Skeete finished with 10 points and six boards.
 
On Saturday, the Golden Bears saw their road upset bid fall just short in a 92-87 loss at Augustana. The Golden Bears continued to light it up from beyond the arc as they hit 13 threes on the night, marking the fifth consecutive game in double digits from deep. Their 13 made three matched their fourth highest total on the year.
 
Concordia's starting five all reached double figures in scoring as the quintet combined for 79 of the 87 points in the loss. Reid Patterson cleared 20+ points for the second night in a row and third time this season as he led the team with 22 points and 10 rebounds, registering his first career double-double. He hit 7-15 from the floor, 4-11 from three-point range and 4-4 from the line. Ian Sluice set a new career high in scoring as he added 18 points on 7-14 shooting and 4-10 from beyond the arc while adding four boards and four assists in the game. Ben Kopetzki followed with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, knocking down 6-10 from the floor.
 
USF SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears and Cougars are meeting for the 31st time in the all-time series this weekend as CSP enters with a 7-23 record against USF. Concordia's best stretch in the series came back in 2015-16 as they won three of four during that span, but the Cougars have won 12 of the past 13 meetings. The Golden Bears have gone 2-12 in 14 contests in Sioux Falls.
 
LAST MEETING WITH THE COUGARS
In the first meeting of the season on Dec. 9, CSP was unable to keep up their high-scoring ways in an 85-59 loss at Sioux Falls.
 
Heading into the night averaging 89.0 points per game, good for second in the NSIC, the Golden Bears were limited to 59 points on 36.7% (22-60) from the floor.
 
The trio of Ben KopetzkiAntwan Kimmons and Japannah Kellogg combined for 38 of the team's 59 points on the night as the starting unit scored all but nine points for the team in the contest. Kopetzki reached double figures for the fourth time this season with a team-high 14 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists while hitting 6-12 from the field.
 
Kimmons followed close behind with 13 points on 4-6 shooting and 4-4 from the free throw line in his 19 minutes of action while Kellogg collected 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds, knocking down four of his seven shot attempts. Reid Patterson added seven points and four rebounds off the bench.
 
SMSU SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears enter this weekend's contest with a record of 16-32 against Southwest Minnesota State. After winning just seven of the first 32 meetings in the all-time series, CSP has improved over recent years with nine wins in the past 17 dating back to 2015, including wins in six of the past eight contests. In 25 previous meetings in Marshall, Concordia has gone 6-19.
 
LAST MEETING WITH THE MUSTANGS
Back on Dec. 8, Concordia knocked down 17 three-pointers as they cruised to an 88-68 win at Southwest Minnesota State.
 
CSP, who entered the night first in the NSIC and 16th in the nation with 10.7 made threes per game, added to that total as they connected on 17 for the second time in two weeks, matching their second largest total overall and largest on the road in program history.
 
Nearly half of those 43 points came from sophomore Reid Patterson, who exploded for a career-best 24 points in the win. Patterson tied for the eighth-most made threes in single-game history at CSP as he hit 6-11 from deep to go along with 4-4 from the free throw line. He was especially effective after the break as he scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the game's final 20 minutes. Will Boser nearly gave the Golden Bears two in double figures off the bench as he hit 3-6 from three-point range to tally nine points.
 
Three of Concordia's five starters reached double digits as Marcus Skeete narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points on 5-8 shooting, nine boards and five assists while Antwan Kimmons and Ben Kopetzki added 10 points apiece. Kimmons chipped in six rebounds, five assists and three made threes while Kopetzki hit 4-7 shooting and dished out a pair of assists.
 
STAT LEADERS
So far this season, the Golden Bears rank highly in several statistical categories.
 
As a team, CSP leads the NSIC and 25th in the nation with 10.0 made threes per game while they rank second and 68th, respectively, in free throws made with 15.7 per game. Concordia also ranks third in the league and 70th in the country with 80.4 points per night as well as second in the conference and 16th in the nation with 28.3 defensive rebounds per game.
 
Individually, Marcus Skeete's 85.9% free throw percentage ranks fourth in the league and his 5.6 defensive rebounds per game are good for sixth. The junior also sits in fifth in field goal percentage (49.8%) and 10th in rebounds (6.9) and 11th in scoring (15.8). Japannah Kellogg ranks fourth with 1.16 blocks per game and eighth with 2.21 offensive rebounds per game.
 
CHASING HISTORY
Junior Marcus Skeete has been a key offensive contributor throughout his four seasons with the Golden Bears as he has tallied 1,164 points over 89 career games. He became the 19th member of the 1,000 point club at CSP on Dec. 16 at Minnesota State and first since Bryndan Matthews in 2019. The Aurora, Ill. native became the fourth member of the 1,000/500/200 club in navy and gold on Jan. 27 as he joined Jeff Chamberlain, Cole Olstad and Matthews in that exclusive group.
