Golden Bears fall to Huskies in four sets in NCAA Region Semifinal

Six players reach double figures for Concordia

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The fourth-seeded and ninth-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (24-7) saw its season come to an end on Friday evening with a four-set loss to top-seeded and second-ranked St. Cloud State (29-2) in the NCAA Central Region Semifinal match.

The loss dropped Concordia's all-time record in the NCAA Region Semifinals to 19-2, with this being just the second time the team has failed to reach the NCAA Region Championship under head coach Brady Starkey.

The Golden Bears opened the match with a come-from-behind 25-23 win in set one, but the Huskies took the next three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-20 to win the match in four sets.

Named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the tournament, setter Teagan Starkey finished the match with 47 set assists and six digs. The senior ends her career at 5,074 total assists, the fourth most in school history.

Also playing in her final match at Concordia, middle blocker Claudia Stahlke tallied 11 kills on .455 hitting to go along with five total blocks. The senior wraps up the season with 167 total blocks, the third most in any season in program history, and an average of 1.39 blocks per set, the second most in single-season program history.

Also named to the All-Tournament Team, senior Emma Schmidt put together another strong match, logging her eighth straight double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Schmidt wraps up her Concordia career with 1,313 kills and 1,408 digs, one of just eight Golden Bears in history to record 1,000 or more in each category.

Ellie Sieling nearly registered a double-double, finishing with 15 digs and eight kills. Libero Cassie Sieling was just behind her with 13 digs, two service aces, and a set assist. Makenna Nold also finished in double figures with 10 kills, two service aces, and two digs.

Senior Sophia Andersen added four kills for the Golden Bears, putting her career total at 1,323, the 11th most in program history.

For St. Cloud State, Hanna Bruskiewicz finished with a match-high 16 kills while Kenzie Foley added a 14-kill, 12-dig double-double.

The Huskies finished the match with a 56-50 edge in kills, outhitting Concordia .325 to .180. St. Cloud State also held advantages in assists (53-48), service aces (6-4), blocks (8-7), and digs (59-52).

The Golden Bears found themselves trailing 18-14 early in the opening set, but CSP closed the frame on an 11-5 run that gave them a 25-23 win to go up 1-0 in the match. The Huskies outhit the Golden Bears .226 to .211 in the set, but a 4-2 edge in service aces and a 16-11 advantage in kills helped CSP escape with the set win.

Concordia found itself in an early hole in set two as St. Cloud State jumped out to an 11-3 lead. The Golden Bears won six of the following eight points to cut the deficit to five at 13-9, but that was as close as they would come with St. Cloud State outscoring them 12-6 the rest of the way to even the match with a 25-15 win.

The Huskies led for most of the early portion of set three once again, but Concordia trailed by just three points at 12-9 midway through the frame. St. Cloud State went on to claim five of the following six points to open a commanding 17-10 lead that it never relinquished on the way to a 25-16 win.

After trailing by as many as seven on two occasions in set four, the Golden Bears battled back to cut the deficit to just three at 19-16. The Huskies did just enough to put the match away from that point, winning six of the final 10 points to cap off the four-set victory with a 25-20 win.
