Strong start helps Golden Bears sweep opening weekend against MIAA competition

CSP defeats Central Missouri 83-61 after 30-7 start to game

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Golden Bear women's basketball team (2-0) went undefeated on the opening weekend after defeating Central Missouri (2-2) 83-61 on Saturday afternoon. Concordia outscored the Jennie 19-5 after the opening period and was up 30-7 midway through the second quarter. 

Senior center Lindsey Becher picked up her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. This marked Becher's ninth double-double in her Golden Bear career. She also added a team-high four blocks to her totals. 

Junior guard Lydia Haack added to Friday's strong 27-point performance with a 17-point performance against the Jennies. She shot 8-13 from the field with four rebounds and a season-high five assists. 

Sophomore guard Ashley Schuelke scored 12 points all from behind the arc going 4-5 on 3-pointers. Junior guard Leah Dengerud scored nine points with three assists and two rebounds. Dengerud was +20 on the court for CSP. 

Concordia-St. Paul scored the first seven points of the game, all scored by Becher and Haack. After leading 12-5 with 2:39 left in the opening period, the Golden Bears went on another 7-0 run to end the quarter. This run was highlighted by a Schuelke 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the opening period. 

The Golden Bears opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run to lead 30-7, eventually extending that lead to 41-16 for their largest of the game. The first half ended with another late-second shot by Lauren Feddema and CSP went into the half up 45-22. 

CSP held Central Missouri to 2-13 (15.4%) from the field in the first quarter and 9-33 (27.3%) in the first half. The Golden Bears shot 17-36 (47.2%) and 6-15 (40%) from behind the arc. Haack, Schuelke and Becher each had nine points in the opening 20 minutes. 

Concordia continued to lead comfortably in the third quarter, despite Central Missouri shooting 10-14 (71.4%). Senior forward Megan Gamble hit the third late shot for the Golden Bears with a 3-pointer in the closing seconds. 

Concordia finished strong in the fourth quarter outscoring UCM 16-14. Becher picked up three rebounds and two blocks in the final period. 

Gamble and Bengtson each scored six points for the Golden Bears. After putting up nine rebounds against Missouri Southern, Gamble hit that mark once again on Saturday. Bengtson added three assists to her totals. 

Sophomore Lauren Wilson and senior Mikayla Kanenwisher each added five points. Kanenwisher tallied three assists and Wilson grabbed three rebounds. 

Emma Mommsen scored four points going 2-2 from the field with a key bucket in the opening quarter. Feddema totaled four points as well. Kierstin Kriewaldt and Ella Campbell saw action at the end of the game. 

Central Missouri was led by Lauren Frost with 19 points. Reese Schaaf added 12 points and nine rebounds. Cierra Smith scored 14 points. 

The Jennies never led in the game. CSP's bench outscored UCM's bench 31-4. The Golden Bears also outscored Central Missouri 40-28 in the paint, 12-8 on second-chance points and 13-6 on fast breaks. 

Concordia outrebounded Central Missouri 38-30 and had 12 more assists. Both teams had 16 turnovers. CSP finished 32-63 (50.8%) from the field and the Jennies finished 24-60 (40%). 

This marks Concordia's first 2-0 start since the 2021-22 season and was CSP's largest victory since last season's 63-39 win over Sioux Falls on Dec. 9, 2023. 

The Golden Bears are set to host their home opener against Truman State (Mo.) (2-0) on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. in the Gangelhoff Center. Concordia-St. Paul will then host Maryville (Mo.) (1-1) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. CSP defeated both teams last season including a buzzer-beater victory against Truman State.
