CSP volleyball secures third consecutive sweep in win over Marauders

Starkey notches her fifth double-double of the season

BISMARCK, N.D. - The #12 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (10-4, 5-1 NSIC) faced off with the University of Mary (1-12, 0-6 NSIC) in the middle of its three-match road trip on Saturday evening, sweeping the Marauders at the McDowell Activity Center.

For the third straight match, Concordia was dominant in all three sets with 25-9, 25-13, and 25-16 wins to complete the sweep. Following the victory, the Golden Bears now hold a 25-0 record against UMary all-time, with 23 of the wins being sweeps.

Leading 9-5 early in set one, Concordia won the following 12 points, 11 of which came on Ellie Sieling's serve, to take a controlling 21-5 advantage, going on to win the set 25-9. The Concordia offense was nearly unstoppable in the set, hitting an astounding .706 with 14 kills while UMary hit just .056 with just a single kill.

The story was similar in set two with a seven-point CSP run giving the Golden Bears a double-digit lead at 17-7 on the way to a 25-13 set win. The Concordia attack put together another efficient set, hitting .615 with 17 kills while the Marauders hit .238 with five kills.

The Golden Bears found themselves trailing 9-7 in the early goings of set three, but a run of 10 consecutive points put them on top for good as they cruised to a 25-16 win to complete the sweep.

CSP held an edge in nearly every statistical category with a 50-12 advantage in kills, a 41-15 advantage in digs, and a 12-3 edge in service aces. For the match, Concordia hit .427 while the Marauders hit .000.

Setter Teagan Starkey put together a strong all-around performance, logging a double-double with 40 set assists (10.33 per set), 11 digs, five service aces, and two kills. The senior has now surpassed 40 or more assists in 11 of her 14 matches this season, registering double-doubles on five occasions.  

Mehlayna Straub led the Golden Bear offense, tallying 13 kills on a .500 hitting percentage and adding two total blocks. Makenna Nold was just behind her with 12 kills on .444 hitting, also contributing four total blocks, two digs, and a service ace. Sophia Andersen also reached double figures, adding 11 kills on .529 hitting.

Ellie Sieling finished in a tie for the team lead in digs with Starkey, logging 11 digs, a set assist, and five kills. Libero Cassie Sieling finished with eight digs and four set assists.

The Golden Bears will complete the three-game road trip on Tuesday, heading to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the University of Sioux Falls at 6 p.m.
