ABERDEEN, S.D. – The #2 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (14-1, 5-1 NSIC) grabbed their second straight four-set road win (26-24, 25-15, 23-25, 25-14) as they extended their winning streak to five with the victory at Northern State (11-3, 4-2 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon.
CSP made it 36 wins in the past 39 meetings with the Wolves as they improved to 38-10 in the all-time series with Northern State.
The Golden Bears were formidable at the net as they tallied 14.0 blocks in the win, registering their largest total in a four-set match since putting up 16 against SMSU on Sept. 14, 2019.
Claudia Stahlke had a huge hand in that effort as her 11.0 blocks were the most in a four-set match in the 25-point scoring format at CSP and tied for most overall during that timeframe, matching Heather Schiller's 11.0 against Augustana on Oct. 2, 2015. The junior added a career-best 11 kills with just one error on 16 attempts for a hitting percentage of .625.
Stahlke was joined by
Jasmine Mulvihill,
Emma Schmidt and
Sophia Andersen in double figures in kills as Mulvihill and Schmidt picked up double-doubles of their own. Mulvihill finished with a match-best 18 kills to go along with 13 digs while Schmidt finished with 12 kills, 13 digs and four blocks in the win. Andersen added 13 kills, four blocks and four digs as well.
Ellie Sieling set a career high over her own as she led all players with 22 digs while also chipping in a pair of aces while her sister,
Cassie Sieling, added seven digs and a match-high three aces.
Teagan Starkey finished with 48 assists, six digs and four blocks on the afternoon.
Abby Meister paced NSU with 21 digs while Keri Walker picked up a double-double with 33 assists and 12 digs in the loss.
An early 5-0 run gave NSU the lead in the first set before an even bigger 10-4 burst extended their lead to 17-11, but the Golden Bears turned it around late to take a 1-0 lead in the match. With the margin still at six at 19-13, CSP rattled off 10 of the next 13 points to gain their first lead since 2-0 at 23-22. After the two teams traded the next two points, the Wolves survived the first set point but wouldn't survive a second as CSP closed it out 26-24.
The momentum carried over into the second set as Concordia took five of the first six points before extending the advantage to five at 8-3. The Wolves managed to battle back to within two at 9-7 and remained within three at 12-9, but another CSP burst put it out of reach as they ballooned it to 20-10 with an 8-1 run. The Golden Bears eventually took the set by the same margin at 25-15 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
With the two teams jostling for the lead in the third set, NSU appeared to take control with four straight points to turn a 13-13 tie into a 17-13 lead. Concordia responded with a run of their own as they pushed within two points of a sweep with 10 of 14 to build a 23-21 edge. Those two points would not come, however, as Northern State scored the final four points of the set to win it 25-23.
The Wolves got off to a fast start in the fourth with the first three points and six of the first eight, but a run midway through the set turned the tide in favor of the Golden Bears. With the score at 9-5 in favor of NSU, Concordia embarked on a huge 9-0 run as a part of a larger 13-1 stretch to take the lead for good at 18-10. Another 4-0 run down the stretch pushed the lead to double digits as CSP took the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
The Golden Bears have a quick turnaround as they kick off a four-match homestand on Tuesday night against Sioux Falls at Gangelhoff Center.
