Concordia-St. Paul announces Athletic Hall of Fame, induction class of 2023

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia University has announced the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2023. The nine new members inducted this year are: Charles Gilbert, Cassie (Haag) Lindblom, Amanda (Olsen) Peterson, Eric Power, Ellie (Duffy) Richards, Tom Rubbelke, Tre Sayles, Joe Shallenberger, and Hillary (Johnson) Williams.

This year’s induction class represents six different sports with two selections each for football, volleyball, soccer, and track & field along with one each from baseball, softball, and an administrative selection. This year’s class features one dual-sport athlete, Charles Gilbert (football, track & field), and one dual-designation selection, Tom Rubbelke (softball coach, athletic director).

The 2023 Concordia St. Paul Athletic Hall of Fame class will be officially inducted at the Athletic Hall of Fame brunch during Homecoming 2023 weekend on Saturday, October 7 at 9 a.m. on campus at the Buenger Education Center (BEC). Tickets to the brunch are limited, but available on the CSP homecoming registration website.

The nine new members represent the 19th induction class to the Athletic Hall of Fame dating back to its origination in 1992. The Hall of Fame now has 151 members.

Concordia began sponsoring four-year college athletics in 1967-68, competing as a junior college and high school (academy) from its founding in 1893 until that time. Until 1999, CSP was known as the Comets and competed as members of the NAIA before its transition to NCAA Division II with membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) starting in the 1999-2000 academic year through present day.

MEET THE 2023 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CLASS

A two-year transfer wide receiver and kick returner, Charles Gilbert helped the Golden Bears to a pair of winning seasons and a Mineral Water Bowl selection in his time at Concordia.

The Jacksonville, Florida native also had the rare opportunity to return to his hometown as a professional when he signed a rookie free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in June of 2012 following his graduation from Concordia, where he spent his final semester on campus lighting up the charts for the Golden Bear track & field team.

He was a dynamic threat on the football field, leading the Golden Bears to a 14-9 overall record including 12-8 during NSIC competition. His first year with CSP, Concordia went 7-3 to finish fourth in the NSIC and ended the year with an 8-4 overall record, just one victory shy of tying the school’s single-season wins record.

He put up back-to-back double-digit touchdown seasons with 12 as a junior and a school-record 14 receiving TDs as a senior. He is the last Golden Bear to post a 1,000-yard receiving season when he had 1,068 yards on 46 catches, averaging 23.2 per catch as a senior.

In just two seasons, he ranks fourth in CSP history with 25 receiving touchdowns and seventh with 1,941 career receiving yards and his 190 receiving yards at Minot State in 2011 is the sixth-most in a game in program history.

A criminal justice major at Concordia, Gilbert is now serving his hometown community in Jacksonville with Youth Opportunity Investments, developing and implementing procedures for a juvenile detention facility. He leads a team of people to ensure the facility is safe and that the youth are working towards their goals and program as outlined by the courts.

A four-year starter and four-time National Champion for the Concordia volleyball program, Cassie (Haag) Lindblom was an efficient offensive threat and formidable blocker during her time in navy and gold.

Lindblom’s CSP squads won four consecutive NCAA and NSIC titles as they won 136 of 146 matches (.932 winning percentage), including a 76-4 record (.950 winning percentage) in NSIC play and a perfect 24-0 mark in NCAA Tournament action during her career.

The Chaska, Minnesota (Southwest Christian HS) native came on strong during the team’s postseason run in her freshman campaign as she registered double figures in kills in each of the six NCAA Tournament matches to earn both NCAA Central Region and NCAA All-Tournament Team honors to wrap up a perfect 37-0 season.

She followed it up with the strongest offensive output of her career in her second season, contributing a career-best 3.55 kills per set to earn AVCA All-America First Team recognition as the team made it four NCAA Championships in as many years.

Following another NCAA Championship run in her junior year, Lindblom took home AVCA All-America First Team honors for a second time in her senior season. She set a then-program record with a .402 hitting percentage to secure her fourth NCAA title in a row and the sixth in a row for the program.

After graduation, Lindblom earned her M.A. in counseling and psychological services while working as a graduate assistant for the Golden Bear volleyball program. She then moved on to work for the Associated Clinic of Psychology and as an admissions counselor at CSP before becoming a stay-at-home mom. She resides in Chaska with her husband, Tyler, and their son, Silas.

In her two seasons with the Golden Bear soccer program, Amanda (Olsen) Peterson was a prolific goal scorer and facilitator, setting several records at Concordia.

Averaging over a point and a half per game and over a half a goal per game over 34 career appearances, the Cottage Grove, Minnesota (Park HS) native was a reliable source of offense as she never went more than three games without a goal or an assist in her career.

After joining CSP from Dakota County Technical College, she hit the ground running in her first season on campus. Peterson broke school records with 13 goals and 30 points to earn All-Region and NSIC Newcomer of the Year honors while helping the team to a two-win improvement both overall and in conference play.

She was back for more in her second campaign as she tallied eight goals to go along with 10 assists to garner All-Region and All-NSIC First Team recognition for the second year running. She once again helped the squad improve as they added to both their overall and NSIC win totals.

Since graduation, Peterson has spent the past eight-plus years working in the mortgage business and she currently works as a secondary market team lead at Luminate Home Loans. She met her husband, Dylan, while at DCTC, and they currently reside in Savage with their two sons, William and Isaac.

A four-year standout on the defensive line, Eric Power helped the Golden Bears to a pair of NSIC Co-Championships and Mineral Water Bowl appearances during his time with the program.

Power took part in perhaps the most successful stretch in program history as Concordia tallied a 29-17 record, including a stellar 21-9 mark in Northern Sun play over his four seasons on the gridiron.

After a redshirt season in 2002, Power stepped in as a key cog for the CSP defense the following year as the squad claimed the first NSIC crown in just their fifth season in the league with an 8-4 overall record and a 7-1 mark in NSIC play.

Following a solid 7-4 season as a sophomore, he took a big step forward in 2005 as he led the NSIC in sacks and tackles for loss while leading the team to a second NSIC title in three years with a 9-3 record and a 6-1 record in NSIC action, earning All-America honors for his efforts.

As a senior, Power registered a program-record 17 quarterback hurries to go along with a career-best 16.5 tackles for loss to wrap up a dominant career.

Following graduation, Power has worked his way up in the cyber security industry and is a co-founder of Beryllium Infosec, Inc. and Cuick Trac., focusing primarily on defense industrial base suppliers and securing the country's IP and assets from foreign adversaries. He still supports the football program as a mentor to several football student-athletes each year and helps those working toward a cyber security career. He resides in Prior Lake with his wife, Mandy, and their three children, Lincoln, Blake and Brody.

An unprecedented five-time National Champion with the Golden Bear volleyball program, Ellie (Duffy) Richards was a standout performer in the classroom and on the court during her time in navy and gold.

In her five years on campus, Concordia compiled a staggering 173-11 record for a 94.0 percent winning percentage, including victories in Richards’ first 74 NSIC matches. In total, her squads went 96-4 in league play and a perfect 30-0 in NCAA Tournament play.

After a loss in the first match of her college career, Richards helped the Golden Bears rattle off an incredible 75 consecutive wins over her first two-plus seasons as she was a key contributor during that span, earning NCAA All-Tournament Team honors in her freshman campaign.

The Fridley, Minnesota (Totino-Grace HS) native missed the 2010 season due to injury, but was back to her hard-hitting ways in the two following seasons. She capped off her decorated career with a huge senior year that saw her take home AVCA All-America Second Team recognition while guiding CSP to their sixth of seven NCAA titles in a row.

While her successes on the court were memorable, her accomplishments off the court were perhaps even more impressive. In addition to being a two-time Academic All-America pick and a four-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Richards was active in the community as well. Her dedication to help her community led to her participation in more than 15 service projects, including a 10-day mission trip to Guatemala. Other service included Tri-Pi Math Club, Concordia University Science Club, Feed My Starving Children, Gillette Children's Hospital and Immaculate Conception Elementary School.

A double major in mathematics and biology at Concordia, Richards has put her degrees to good use as a Principal Biostatistician at Boston Scientific where she is responsible for trial design and data analysis in medical device clinical trials. She resides in Minnetonka with her husband, Thomas, and their son, Melvin.

Affectionately known as “Rubes,” Tom Rubbelke spent parts of four decades at Concordia-St. Paul, coming to CSP as an assistant softball coach in 1983 until he was named head softball coach in 1998, leading the team for seven years before being appointed as Concordia’s Athletic Director during the 2004-05 academic year. His transition into athletics administration started near the end of the 2001-02 academic year when he was named the department’s Assistant Athletic Director and Compliance Coordinator in conjunction with his softball coaching duties.

He served 12 years as Concordia’s athletic director, and in his time leading the department, the Golden Bears captured an NCAA record seven volleyball national championships in a row, earned 12 appearances at the NCAA Division II Championships, 19 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances, competed in 34 NCAA Tournaments and captured a combined 26 Northern Sun conference championships (regular season & tournament).

Additionally, Rubbelke presided over a department that was awarded as the host site for seven NCAA regional championships, hosting numerous NSIC Tournaments and culminating in hosting back-to-back NCAA Division II Volleyball Championships at the Gangelhoff Center in 2008 and 2009 with the Golden Bears winning the championships on their home court in front of a packed arena of CSP students, staff, alumni and families.

In the classroom during Rubbelke’s tenure as athletic director, Concordia’s teams earned 46 team academic awards by their respective coaches’ associations, had 11 programs ranked in the top-10 in the country for their team grade point averages and produced six teams who had the highest GPA in Division II in their sport.

He was an influential member of the Northern Sun, the NCAA, was an active member of NACDA and served on the Division II Athletic Director’s Board of Directors.

Above all, his coaching and administrative career was defined by a commitment to the student-athlete experience, raising the bar for increased student-athlete scholarship funding along with improvements to facilities across the board for training, competition, and studying.

In his coaching career, Rubbelke presided over the softball program’s transition from an NAIA program competing in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) to an NCAA Division II and Northern Sun (NSIC) power. The Golden Bears quickly won NSIC regular season and tournament championships in 2001 in just the second year of league and DII membership, with his peers voting him as the NSIC Coach of the Year.

In his seven years, Rubbelke’s Comet and Golden Bear clubs combined for a 220-124 overall record including a 56-24 mark in NSIC play. The team had five 30-plus win seasons and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the Sweet Sixteen each time including a regional championship and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Tom and his wife, Barb, have two children, Bryan and Teresa, as well as five grandchildren.

2001 NSIC Softball Coach of the Year
One of the most decorated student-athletes in program history, Tre Sayles hit the ground running for the Golden Bears as he earned All-NSIC honors in each of his eight NSIC Championships appearances, collecting 15 All-NSIC selections throughout his illustrious career.

The Woodbury, Minnesota (Woodbury HS) native wasted no time making his mark as he became an NSIC Champion on his first try, winning the high jump in the 2006 NSIC Indoor Championships.

After earning a second All-NSIC pick in the outdoor season, Sayles took a huge step forward in his sophomore year, eclipsing 20 points in both the NSIC Indoor and Outdoor Championships to finish the year with a staggering 45 points. He became an NSIC Champion for the second year in a row as he claimed the top spot in the triple jump in the NSIC Outdoor Championships.

Sayles tallied two more NSIC Championships in the high jump in his junior campaign as he took first place in both NSIC Championships meets. He set a career-best with 24 points in the 2008 Indoor Championships.

In his final season of competition, Sayles capped a stellar career by becoming the top point scorer among all athletes at the 2009 NSIC Indoor Championships while collecting the final four All-NSIC selections of his career that year.

Sayles, who earned his B.A. in communication studies, now works as a national sales manager for CyberPower Systems. He also remains involved in track and field, assisting with the jumps at his alma mater, Woodbury High School. He resides in Woodbury with his wife, Layla, and their son, Taius.

A key member of the baseball program during the transition to NCAA Division II, Joe Shallenberger helped guide Concordia from the UMAC in his freshman season to an impressive 18-12 record at the Division II level in his senior campaign.

The Minneapolis, Minnesota (Patrick Henry HS) native made his presence known from day one as he stepped in to lead the team with a .355 batting average in his freshman year to push CSP to a 7-4 mark and a second-place finish in UMAC play.

He didn't miss a beat with the step up in competition to DII the following year as he slugged .500 for the second consecutive season before exploding for a massive junior season. Shallenberger hammered eight home runs while slugging a massive .690 to garner All-NSIC First Team honors in year three on campus.

He saved his best for last as he played a starring role in a massive seven-win improvement in NSIC play and an eight-win improvement overall in his senior campaign. The slugger slashed an incredible .451/.510/.901 with 11 home runs to make it back-to-back All-NSIC First Team seasons.

His baseball career continued post-college as he played professionally for the St. Paul Saints in the Northern League and the Kalamazoo Kings in the Frontier League from 2002-2004. He still plays for the Minnetonka Millers today.

Shallenberger, who earned his degree in K-12 Health/Physical Education from Concordia, spent 13 years as a physical education teacher in the Minneapolis Public School system before taking the assistant baseball coach job at Macalester College. He resides in Plymouth with his wife, Katie, and their three children, Griffin, Isabel and Zoey.

After moving south from Blaine, Minnesota (Blaine HS) to join the Golden Bears, Hillary (Johnson) Williams became a key cog in the Concordia lineup, helping the squad to a pair of top-four finishes in the Northern Sun during her time in St. Paul.

Joining forces with Rachel Vitense over her first three years on campus, the duo provided the most lethal scoring combo in school history with both netting 19 goals apiece during that span to push the young program to new heights.

Williams helped CSP to a fourth-place finish in the NSIC in her freshman campaign, securing double-digit wins for the first time in program history. The Golden Bears improved on that mark two years later as they took second in the NSIC and booked their first trip to the NSIC Tournament semifinals as Williams netted eight times and assisted on five more goals to garner All-Region Second Team recognition.

She wrapped up her stellar career in 2007 as she made it back-to-back seasons with eight goals to earn All-NSIC First Team honors for the second year in a row.

After working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, she became a stay-at-home mother following the birth of their second son. She remains involved in soccer as she coaches a 10U competitive soccer team that competes in four different leagues throughout the year. Williams resides in Reno, Nevada with her husband, Perry, and their two sons, Jack and James.
