Golden Bears claim series against Minot State with a 9-4 win

Wednesday's doubleheader against SMSU has been cancelled

MAUSTON, Wis. - Concordia-St. Paul baseball (11-13, 7-4 NSIC) claimed the three game series against the Minot State Beavers (16-9, 7-6 NSIC) with a 9-4 win in the finale at the Woodside Sports Complex on Monday afternoon.

Due to weather conditions, the upcoming series this Wednesday between the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears and Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs has been cancelled. CSP will return to action on Friday to face the St. Cloud State Huskies on the road at Joe Faber & Dick Putz Field. With today's win, the Golden Bears tied the all-time series between the two teams, 11-11. The nine runs scored are the most that CSP has put up against MISU since April 7, 2021, when they edged the Beavers in a 16-10 shootout in Minot.

The Golden Bears provided 11 hits in the contest that was highlighted by a home run from Nick Thimsen and a pair of doubles from Mason Wolf. Kal Brohmer added a 2-3 showing at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a run, while Bryce Nelson and Justin McGuigan each scored a pair of runs on a two-hit afternoon.

Christian Morel (2-3) picked up his second winning performance of the season on the bump for the Golden Bears. The junior right-hander provided a seven inning shutout with three strikeouts before the Beavers reached the run column in the eighth inning. Eric Lundell closed the show after pitching the final 1.2 innings for CSP.

Today's game between the Golden Bears and the Beavers was a low scoring pitching duel in the early going before the Golden Bears used five runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to claim the 9-4 victory.

After stranding a pair in the top of the first, CSP was able to strike first with Thimsen's third home run of the season that carried over the left center fence to give the Golden Bears an early 1-0 advantage.

Neither team could find their offense for the next five scoreless innings, as Morel and the Beavers starter Craig Schmich would find themselves in a pitching duel.

However, the Golden Bears broke the game wide open with five runs on four hits in the seventh inning. McGuigan, Nelson, Brohmer and Thimsen each collected base hits, while Mason Nadolney collected a sacrifice fly and a throwing error by the Beavers third baseman allowed the final two runs of the inning to cross home plate.

In the eighth, Minot State responded with an RBI single and a three-RBI double to cut the Golden Bears' lead to two runs. However, CSP answered with three runs off an RBI single from Brohmer, a sacrifice fly from Juliar and a fielding error from the Beavers' third baseman to secure the 9-4 win.
