CSP baseball falls to St. Olaf in non-conference play

Mason Wolf gave the Golden Bears their final lead with a 2-RBI single in the eighth

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -Concordia-St. Paul baseball (16-21,12-11 NSIC) dropped a midweek non-conference road contest to the St. Olaf Oles (9-13, 3-4 MIAC) on Wednesday afternoon at Mark Almi Field.

The Golden Bears will return to action at home on Saturday for a weekend series against the Augustana Vikings. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with game two following shortly after. Sunday will consist of a single game beginning at noon with senior day festivities following the game's conclusion.

Today's game consisted of several momentum shifts and lead changes throughout the contest, as there were four lead changes during the 21 combined run game. After the Golden Bears took their final lead in the top of the eighth with a three-run inning, the Oles responded with a pair in the bottom half to claim the 11-10 victory.

Concordia recorded nine hits in the game with Nick Thimsen leading the way with a pair of hits that included a double and two RBIs. Noah Juliar and Mason Wolf shined with pinch hit RBIs in their only plate appearances, while Michael Sturek showed patience at the plate with a trio of walks that led to a pair of runs scored.

Five different pitchers saw the mound for CSP. Evan Eberle picked up a no-decision in his first career start on the bump. The freshman collected a strikeout, allowing two hits and a run in 2.0 innings of work. Isaac Johnson recorded a team-leading two strikeouts, while Carter Schulte (0-1) collected a strikeout and allowed only one earned run in his first loss of the season.

After spotting the Oles the first run of the game, the Golden Bears answered with six runs off a pair of hits in the fourth inning that was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Thimsen and an RBI single from Jack Greenlun.

St. Olaf responded with a flurry of runs in the fifth innings after collecting seven runs off five hits that was highlighted by a three-RBI double to regain the lead. They added another run in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 9-6.

The Golden Bears cut the lead to two runs in the seventh after Carter Shook collected an RBI single that drove in pinch-runner Bryce Nelson with the bases loaded. However, the Oles escaped the inning with minimal damage after back-to-back outs got them out of the jam and stranded the three base runners.

Concordia regained the lead with a trio of runs in the eighth after Juliar recorded a pinch-hit RBI single to drive in Sturek before Wolf used a pinch-hit two-RBI single that drove in Bryce Nelson and pinch-hitter Brayden Roybal to give the Golden Bears a 10-9 advantage.

The Oles swung the lead back into their favor in the bottom of the eighth with a two-RBI single up the middle that ultimately sealed the 11-10 victory for the Oles.
