Golden Bears edge WSC in series opener

Korey Dahlberg shined with zero earned runs and four strikeouts

WAYNE, Neb. - Concordia-St. Paul baseball (16-18, 12-9 NSIC) collected a 4-1 victory over the Wayne State Wildcats (18-19, 12-11 NSIC) in the series opener on Saturday afternoon at Pete Chapman Complex.

After spotting the WSC the first run of the game in the fourth inning, the Golden Bears were able to rally off four unanswered runs that included a three run six innings to capture the series opener.

Concordia collected a total of six hits. Mason Wolf led the Golden Bears with an RBI double, a run and a pair of walks at the plate. Noah Juliar added a multi-hit game with a pair of hits in three plate appearances, which included a sacrifice bunt.

Korey Dahlberg (4-5) collected his fourth winning decision of the season with four strikeouts on the bump. The sophomore allowed five hits, zero earned runs and three walks in 6.0 innings of work. Leo Bustos and Eric Lundell closed the show with a pair of strikeouts each. The duo held the Wildcats scoreless in the final 3.0 innings of play.

Neither team could find an offensive advantage in the early going as a pitching duel between Dahlberg and the Wildcats starter, Kirk Corbin, left the two teams scoreless for the first three innings of play.

An error by the Golden Bears allowed the Wildcats to strike first with a run in the fourth. However, they responded in the next half with an equalizer after an RBI from Bryce Nelson allowed Wolf to score.

CSP secured the win with a trio of runs in the sixth. The first two runs in the innings occurred after a wild pitch from the WSC pitcher allowed Nick Thimsen to cross for the lead run, while Jaden Werner scored later in the sequence due to a throwing error from the Wildcats catcher. Later in the inning, an RBI double from Wolf drove home Mason Nadolney to secure the 4-1 victory.

UP NEXT: The Golden Bears will return to action tomorrow at Pete Chapman Complex for the doubleheader finale against the Wildcats. First pitch for game one is scheduled for noon with game two following shortly after.
