WINTER PARK, Fla. - Concordia-St. Paul (3-4) closed out its spring trip to Florida with a 19-6 loss at #10 Rollins College (6-0) on Wednesday afternoon at Barker Family Stadium just north of downtown Orlando.
Concordia returns to non-conference action at home on Tuesday, March 14 with a 7 p.m. start against UW-Stout at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Golden Bears scored first as
Sara Kaiser scored her first of two goals just over four minutes into play. She was one of three Concordia players with a 2-goal game, joined by freshmen
Lauren Sheets and
Kayleigh Nelson.
But the host Tars, ranked 10th in the IWLCA Top-25 Coaches Poll, scored the next 11 goals from the 9:04 mark of the first quarter through the 8:22 mark of the second before Sheets netted her 20th goal of the year to snap the run.
Trailing 13-2 at the break, Concordia allowed Rollins to score the first two goals of the second half in the first four-plus minutes of action before CSP rallied, scoring three of the next four goals to gain momentum, forcing the hosts to call timeout.
Kaiser, Nelson and Sheets each scored during the run.
The fourth quarter was quiet offensively, with Rollins scoring nine seconds into the quarter before Nelson's second goal of the day with just under 11 minutes to go. The goals were scarce until the closing seconds when the Tars scored with eight seconds left.
Of Concordia's six goals, two were assisted, with
Laurelle Weisbrod and
Sydney Smith each picking up a helper.
The Golden Bears nearly kept pace with the nationally-ranked Tars on the draw, with Rollins holding a slight 15-12 edge as CSP freshman
Susie Monson led all players in the game with five draw controls.
But despite draw controls being nearly even, Rollins held a strong 45-8 final shot margin with 32 shots on goal. However, of CSP's eight shots, all eight were on goal and six found the net while Concordia's goalies picked up 13 saves on Rollins' 32 shots on goal.
Junior
Maddy Huebner led CSP with eight saves, allowing eight goals in 38:22 of play in the cage while senior starter
Candace McDole secured five saves in a busy first 21-plus minutes of play against 16 shots on goal.
While draw controls were closely contested, the shot margin went in Rollins' favor due to a 25-10 turnover margin as Concordia had just 7-18 on clear attempts while Rollins was successful on 17 of 20 clears including 11-11 in the first half to build the lead.
Caroline Gastonguay led Rollins offensively with six goals and two assists.
