Golden Bears win two, outscore Wheeling and Notre Dame 22-5

Pilz and Olson pick up complete game wins with solid outings in the circle

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (9-9) won both of their games on Tuesday morning, defeating Wheeling University (W.Va) (1-10) 8-1 and Notre Dame (Ohio) (4-6) 14-4. The Golden Bears improve to 6-2 on the trip with two games left and have outscored their opponents 58-42.

GAME ONE: Concordia 8, Wheeling 1
The Cardinals scored first in the second inning, bringing in their only run of the game on a one-out single from catcher Madison George.

The one run lead did not stand for long. With two-outs in the bottom of the inning the Bears strung together four hits and walk to score four runs. Sydney Pelzer and Annalise Scamehorn hit back-to-back singles, followed by a walk from Taylor Griffin to load the bases. Avery Johnson cleared the bases with a three RBI double and Clara Heislen scored her on another double in the next at-bat.

The four runs knocked Wheeling's starter Tess Wise out of the game and reliever Abby Bumbico would get the final out of the inning. Bumbico threw two more scoreless innings, but was replaced in the fifth after giving up a two-out, RBI double to Pelzer.

Concordia scored their final three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Morgan Medlo led-off the inning with a single and moved over to second two batters later with a Heislen single. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error from the second baseman in Houston's at-bat.

Kristin Pilz (1-3) had her best outing of the season to pick up her first win of the year. The junior went all seven innings, giving up just four hits and one run. She held the Cardinal batters to a .167 batting average while striking out three and walking two.

The Golden Bears finished with eight hits, half of which came from Clara Heislen and Sydney Pelzer, who were both 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Avery Johnson was 1-for-2 and led the team with 3 RBI.

GAME TWO: Concordia 14, Notre Dame 4 (Six Innings)
Both teams went down in order in the first inning, but got a run on the board in the second. In the top half, the CSP third baseman Grace Beseman walked, stole second, and scored on a Taylor Griffin two-out single.

The Falcons loaded the bases in the bottom of inning with one out, but were only able to score one. After a leadoff strikeout, Notre Dame put together a walk and two singles to load the bases. Catcher Lindsey Breuer singled down the right field line to score one, but CSP right fielder Alexus Houston was able to get the ball back in quickly to hold the Falcon runner at third and keep the bases loaded. Concordia starter Bryanna Olson struck out the next two batters to end the inning and leave the three runners stranded.

The Golden Bears batted through the line-up in the third inning, scoring five runs in the process. Houston got the scoring started with her third triple of the year to score Heislen from first. After a walk by Jacey Defries, Danni Sharum singled to bring in Houston to make it 3-1. A walk from Grace Beseman ended the day for Notre Dame starter Allison Weilnau. The CSP offense kept it going against reliever Madison Olszewski as Sydney Pelzer took her third pitch to right center for a two RBI double. Two more walks would bring in one more run for the Golden Bears to increase the lead to 6-1.Olszewski settled down and along with Olson, threw scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth.

Concordia broke things open in the top of the sixth, batting through the line-up for the second time in the game, and increased their lead to 13. Freshman Riley Rosenthal hit the first double of her career to get things started for the Golden Bears and scored four pitches later on Beseman's third home run of the season.

A walk and four straight singles brought in three more runs, capped off by a single from freshman Tori Turgeon to score Avery Johnson for the first hit and RBI of her career. Houston reached on an error to load the bases and Morgan Medlo grounded out to score Rachael Novak. Rosenthal came back to the plate for the second time in the inning and after starting it off with her first double, hit a laser to right center for her first triple and picked up two more RBI. Beseman got out on a fly ball to end the inning with Concordia in the lead 14-1.

Notre Dame got a one-out, three-run home run from Alexi Maciejowski, but it would not be enough to extend the game. Olson finished off the final two batters on four pitches to keep the ten run lead and end the game in six innings.

Olson picked up the complete game win to improve her record to 6-4. Through six innings Olson gave up for runs on four hits and held the Falcons to a .217 batting average. She also added six strikeouts to bring her season total to 68.

The Golden Bears finished with 14 hits, tying their season high against Bridgeport on Friday.
