Golden Bears split in dramatic fashion at SCSU

Beseman has strong offensive game at Husky Dome

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (11-11) continued to hold its .500 record late into non-conference play, splitting a doubleheader at St. Cloud State (12-10) on Friday afternoon at the Husky Dome. CSP won the first game 6-4 before falling 6-5 on a walk-off homer in game two.

Concordia was powered by junior Grace Beseman, who had a pair of multi-hit games, combining to go 4-7 with three runs, two RBIs, her second double, fourth home run and sixth stolen base of the season.

Junior right handed pitcher Bryanna Olson (7-6) was handed the decision in each game, securing the complete game win in game one, allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts and one walk in seven innings before taking the loss as SCSU in relief in game two.

Concordia will continue competing in its 5-game weekend at the Husky Dome with two games on Saturday against Parkside (Wis.) at 1 p.m. and Bemidji State at 5 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Bemidji State.

GAME 1: CSP 6, SCSU 4
The Golden Bears executed in game one, only leaving three runners on base while Bryanna Olson stifled the Huskies with runners on, forcing SCSU to leave seven aboard including first and second in the fourth, the bases loaded in the fifth and runners on first and second in the sixth inning.

After issuing a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, Olson took control by retiring nine straight Huskies including five via the strikeout. After pitching out of trouble in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, Olson retired the last five batters of the game on flyouts.

In the fourth, with the bases loaded and one out, Grace Beseman made the big play with her glove, snaring a liner and stepping on third to retire the side with a double play.

The Golden Bears took the lead in the top of the second inning when sophomore Avery Johnson clobbered a three-run homer to left field as part of a 4-run inning and CSP wouldn't relinquish the lead the rest of the game. The homer was Johnson's first this season and fourth of her career.

Beseman tacked on a solo homer in the fifth for a key insurance run, the 25th home run of her career.

GAME 2: SCSU 6, CSP 5
In game two, the Golden Bears secured double plays at key times, showing the importance of glove work to their success. In the fifth, with runners on second and third with one out, CSP executed its second caught stealing double play of the year, forcing SCSU into a 263583 caught stealing, getting both runners out to end the inning to preserve a 3-3 tie.

In the sixth inning, leading 5-3, strong-armed right fielder Alexus Houston made a catch in the outfield and doubled-off the a runner on first base with one out to end another frame, preventing SCSU from bringing the top of its lineup to the plate with a runner on base.

But the Huskies picked up two big hits in the second game, a bases clearing double down the left field line with two outs in the third inning to take the first lead, and a walk-off three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

In between the two big hits, CSP scored five times, picking up three runs in the fourth inning on an RBI double down the left field line by Beseman to score Houston, and a two-run triple to right center field by Jacey Defries, scoring Beseman and Sydney Pelzer.

In the sixth, Houston once again set the table, leading off with a single up the middle, followed by an infield single by Beseman. Cleanup hitter Danni Sharum brought home Houston with a single through the left side and with two outs, shortstop Taylor Griffin drew a bases loaded walk for a 2-run lead.

Left handed starting pitcher Erica McCullough did not factor into the decision, working 4.0 innings, allowing three runs with three strikeouts before giving way to righty Kristi Pilz, who allowed a run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief.

With the strong day at the plate, Beseman has increased her average nearly 100 points in the last seven games, going 10-22 with a pair of homers, scoring eight runs during the stretch.
