CSP baseball concludes non-conference action against UMD

First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at U.S. Bank Stadium

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (3-8) makes a quick turnaround as they will face the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (6-5) in the non-conference doubleheader finale on Wednesday night at U.S. Bank Stadium.
 
The first pitch for game one of the doubleheader is slated for 6:30 p.m., followed by game two shortly after.

LAST TIME OUT
The Golden Bears are coming off a 3-4 showing at the TIGS Sports Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Arizona. CSP faced off with teams from across NCAA Division II throughout the week, which included Adams State (Colo.), Malone (Ohio), Walsh (Ohio) and conference foe Southwest Minnesota State.
 
As a team, the Golden Bears slashed .344/.402/.430 with 71 hits that included 20 extra bases and 50 RBIs. While on base, the Golden Bears were 5-for-10 (.500) on stolen base attempts, while the opposition was 14-for-20 (.700).
 
Nick Thimsen led the Golden Bears in hitting after slashing .423/.531/.808 and scoring five runs at the Tucson Invitational. The junior outfielder recorded 11 hits highlighted by five doubles, a triple and a home run. He also drove in eight runners, was walked five times, stole a base and was hit by a pitch.
 
Kal Brohmer added a solid performance behind the plate after slashing .476/.519/.524 and scoring a trio of runs for the Golden Bears in Arizona. The sophomore notched 10 hits, eight RBIs and four walks.
 
Bryce Nelson slashed .259/.355/.333 over the seven games. The junior infielder collected seven hits, seven runs, four RBIs, three walks and a hit by pitch.
 
Noah Juliar recorded six hits, six runs that was highlighted by a grand slam against Adams State (3/3) and a team-best nine RBIs on the trip. Brayden Roybal led the team in runs (11) and walks (seven). Mason Wolf added a team-best two stolen bases on four attempts.
 
Korey Dahlberg led the way for the pitchers after going 1-1 with a 0.75 earned run average and 13 strikeouts. The sophomore finished the invitational with 12.0 innings pitched, allowing only one earned run and three walks. The opposing team's batting average against Dahlberg was .250 and only two of his hits went for extra bases.
 
Jonah Lewis combined for 10.0 innings and finished with an 0-1 record and 12 strikeouts in his two starts on the bump. The junior collected an earned run average of 3.60, allowing four earned runs and 15 hits for the Golden Bears.
 
Eric Lundell picked up his first win of the season in relief for the Golden Bears. The junior went 4.1 innings with five strikeouts, allowing only three hits and three walks. Leo Bustos also picked up his first win of the season and Mason Nadolney secured his first save.
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST UMD
The Golden Bears and the Bulldogs have met 58 times since April 14, 2000, with the series tied 29-29. UMD claimed seven of the first eight matchups in the series, including an 18-1 victory in the inaugural game in St. Paul. However, CSP has claimed nine of the last 10 matchups, including an 11-10 thriller that went into extra innings in the previous matchup.
 
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
Minnesota Duluth posted 25-25 (16-16 NSIC) record in the 2022 campaign and was picked to finish seventh in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 113 points.
 
The Bulldogs are currently 6-5 after kicking off their season at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Auburndale, Fla.
 
UMD collected an 11-3 victory over Tiffin, a 12-6 victory over West Virginia, a 7-2 victory over Lewis, a 3-2 victory over Wayne State University and pair of run-rule wins over Davis & Elkins. Four of their five loss came by three runs or less, while their largest defeat came against Tiffin by a final score of 14-4.
 
The batter to watch for the Bulldogs is Ethan Cole, who has slashed .300/.400. /.600 with nine hits, 10 runs and 10 RBIs in Florida. Four of his hits went for extra bases, which included a pair of home runs, a double and a triple.
 
For the pitchers, senior Brayden Buttweiler has led the way for the Bulldogs with a 2-0 record, a 2.61 earned run average and a team-leading 15 strikeouts. He has allowed nine hits and three earned runs in 10.1 innings pitched.
