ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's basketball team (8-18, 6-14 NSIC) closes out the regular season this weekend as they play host Upper Iowa on Senior Night on Thursday before traveling to Winona State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
SENIOR NIGHT
CSP will honor their lone senior,
Roy Grigsby on Senior Night as they play host to the Peacocks on Thursday night. The Superior, Colo. native will be honored during a brief pregame ceremony prior to starting lineup announcements. Grigsby, a Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award winner, has appeared in 54 games, including 12 starts, in his two seasons since transferring from Northern Colorado.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Golden Bears fell to Augustana 86-59 on Friday before dropping an overtime heartbreaker at Wayne State on Saturday in a 92-79 loss.
On Friday, the red hot Golden Bears saw their four-game winning streak snapped on the road as the Vikings outscored CSP 54-30 over the final 21:34 of the night. Concordia's two top scorers led the way on the night as
Marcus Skeete paced the squad with 16 points and four assists while
Antwan Kimmons added 15 points and four boards. Skeete knocked down 6-11 from the floor and Kimmons hit 7-11.
On Saturday, CSP led by as many as 16 in the second half at NSIC South-leading Wayne State (17-9, 12-8 NSIC), but they were unable to hold off the Wildcats as the Golden Bears fell 92-79 in overtime. A career-best 27 points from
John Grigsby helped the Golden Bears build a 46-30 edge with just over 16 minutes to play, but it wasn't enough as CSP fell to the Wildcats.
UPPER IOWA SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears enter the weekend's contests with a record of 15-23 against the Peacocks. CSP has found most of their success against UIU in Fayette as they have gone 9-9 on the road in the series while on their own home court, the Golden Bears have gone 6-12 against the Peacocks. Concordia's best stretch in the series came from 2004-12 with a record of 11-3 during that span. Since December 2014, Upper Iowa has gone 15-2 in the series. Concordia's last win against the Peacocks came back on Feb. 22, 2020 in a 93-61 win at Gangelhoff Center.
LAST MEETING WITH THE PEACOCKS
Back on Dec. 1, Concordia was unable to dig themselves out of an early hole as they fell to Upper Iowa 82-67 in Fayette.
Antwan Kimmons put together another impressive game as he paced all players in the contest with 25 points. The NSIC's leading scorer added a team-high 10 rebounds to finish with his first double-double of the season. He connected on 11-21 from the floor (52.4 percent) while dishing out two assists.
Marcus Skeete finished in double figures for the third straight game as he scored 13 points on 5-11 shooting and 2-3 from deep. The sophomore forward also pulled down six rebounds and led the team with three assists.
WINONA STATE SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears head into this Saturday's meeting with Winona State with a record of 7-53 against the Warriors. WSU won the first 31 meetings from 1986-2008 before CSP registered their first win in the series. Concordia's best stretch in the series came from 2015-16 as they won three of four during that stretch, but Winona State has won 11 of the last 12 since then. CSP has found more success on the road as they have gone 5-28 in Winona compared to 2-22 in St. Paul.
LAST MEETING WITH THE WARRIORS
Despite overcoming a double-digit deficit in the second half, the Golden Bears fell to the Warriors 66-63 in the first meeting of the season back on Dec. 3.
The Golden Bears were the more efficient team shooting the ball, knocking down 20 of their 43 shots (46.5%) compared to Winona's 23-52 (44.2%) performance.
Jacob Everson stepped up big in the second half and tied his career high with 21 points on an efficient 6-10 shooting performance, with 19 of his 21 points coming after halftime. He also tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
Marcus Skeete matched him with 21 points on 7-15 shooting from the floor, including 4-9 from beyond the arc and added four rebounds and three assists.
CHASING HISTORY
Junior
Antwan Kimmons' first season in navy and gold has been a memorable one as the Tartan High School graduate is averaging a program record (more than 10 games played) 20.4 points while his 531 points and 185 free throw attempted both rank second in single-season CSP history. The St. Paul native also ranks in the top five at Concordia in free throws made (fourth with 144) and field goals made (fifth with 186). With two games remaining, Kimmons sits 15 points shy of Bryndan Matthews' single-season record of 546 points set in 2018-19 while he is 16 free throw attempts shy of Terez VanPelt's 201 in 2013-14.
On the season, Kimmons ranks 19
th in the nation in total points and 30
th in points per game while his free throw attempts and made free throws are good for fifth and sixth, respectively.
