Gietzel hits another buzzer-beater; Golden Bears survive in Winona 53-52

Senior guard scores last 10 points in NSIC opener

WINONA, Minn. - The Concordia-St Paul women's basketball team (4-1, 1-0 NSIC) won on a last-second shot by Ally Gietzel 53-52 over Winona State (0-5, 0-1 NSIC). Gietzel scored 21 points with 13 coming from the free throw line. 

With the Golden Bears leading by nine points with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, Winona State went on a 10-0 run to take a 44-43 lead. Both teams would then trade buckets each taking a one-point lead every time. After drawing a foul, Gietzel would hit a pair of free throws to give the Golden Bears a 51-50 lead with 13.2 seconds left. 

Winona State senior guard Emma Carpenter hit a turnaround jump shot with 5.9 seconds left to give the Warriors a 52-51 lead. Gietzel then took an iso jump shot from the left elbow which bounced around and in for the game-winner with 0.3 left on the clock. Gietzel scored the last 10 points for CSP, six of which came at the free-throw line.

After being tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Golden Bears would start the second quarter on a 6-0 run. They eventually pushed that lead to nine points and finished with a 27-19 lead at the half. The Golden Bears would hold that eight-point lead throughout the third quarter and have a 40-32 advantage at the end of it. 

Both teams struggled to score from the field as Concordia went 18-54 and Winona finished at 20-60 shooting. Winona State went 4-17 from behind the arc which was better than CSP's 1-11. The Golden Bears doubled the Warriors in free throws made as CSP went 16-27 from the charity stripe while Winona State went 8-9.

Gietzel led all scorers in the game with 21 points, which was her second-highest total of the season. She also tied her season-high in rebounds with eight. She drew 12 total fouls in the game and went 13-18 from the free-throw line. This is the second straight game that Gietzel has made a buzzer-beating shot to win. She hit one on Saturday night to give CSP a 74-72 win over Truman State. 

Junior center Lindsey Becher led the scoring efforts for most of the game before Gietzel's 10-point run to end it. She finished with 18 points and a season-high nine rebounds. She went 8-16 from the field and had a team-high +8 point differential. Becher fouled out of the game with 2:50 left.

Sophomore guard Leah Dengerud finished with six points and three rebounds. Freshman guard Ashley Schuelke hit the team's lone 3-pointer. Lauren Wilson and Emma Mommsen finished with two points each.

Winona State was led by senior forward Alex Dornfeld with a double-double tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds. Carpenter finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Freshman forward Vivica Bretton finished with eight points for the Warriors. 

Winona State outscored Concordia-St. Paul in the paint 28-26. The Golden Bears scored 11 points off of turnovers compared to eight for the Warriors. The game featured 15 lead changes and 11 ties.

The Golden Bears will be off for Thanksgiving weekend before their home opener in the Gangelhoff Center on Tuesday, Nov. 28 against Michigan Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and it will be Concordia's last non-conference game of the season.
