CSP THANKGIVING TOURNAMENT
The Golden Bears are set to welcome Southwest Minnesota State, Truman State and Upper Iowa to Gangelhoff Center over the weekend with the four teams battling it out in non-conference action.
The Mustangs and Peacocks get things underway with a 4 p.m. tip-off on Saturday before CSP takes on Truman State at 6 p.m. On Sunday, SMSU and TSU open the day with a 2 p.m. meeting, followed by a 4 p.m. start between Concordia and Upper Iowa to close out the weekend.
LAST TIME OUT
Last week, Concordia extended their winning streak to three as they picked up a road win at Minnesota Crookston before returning home for a wild win over Northern Michigan in their home opener.
In Wednesday's win over the Golden Eagles, CSP led for nearly 35 minutes on the night as both teams put up efficient efforts from the floor. Concordia finished a solid 50.0% (32-64) from the floor and 40.9% (9-22) from beyond the arc while UMC hit 51.7% (30-58) overall and 46.7% (7-15) from deep. The Golden Bears won the transition battle as they tallied 15 points on the break while holding UMC to just two. CSP also finished with a 38-31 advantage on the glass, including a 10-6 edge in offensive rebounds, in the win.
Junior
Marcus Skeete collected his fifth career 20-10 performance as he led the team with 27 points, 12 boards, four assists and three steals in a full stat line. He connected on 11-18 from the floor and 4-5 from the line in the win.
On Saturday, Concordia surged out to a 54-36 halftime lead before ballooning the lead all the way out to 26 with 12 minutes to play but had to weather the storm as NMU battled back to within three with a massive 25-2 run midway through the second half. CSP showed their resilience as they maintained their advantage to pick up their first win in three all-time meetings with the Wildcats.
The former Tartan High School pairing of
Antwan Kimmons and
Jordan Horn combined for 57 of the team's 108 points as Kimmons led all players with 29 points while Horn added 28. Kimmons filled the box score with seven rebounds and five assists while hitting 9-12 from the field, 3-4 from deep and 8-9 from the line while Horn pulled down five boards, dished out four assists and went a near-perfect 16-18 from the charity stripe.
WINONA STATE SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears head into Tuesday's meeting with Winona State with a record of 7-54 against the Warriors. WSU won the first 31 meetings from 1986-2008 before CSP registered their first win in the series. Concordia's best stretch in the series came from 2015-16 as they won three of four during that stretch, but Winona State has won 12 of the last 13 since then, including the last eight in a row. CSP has found more success on the road as they have gone 5-29 in Winona compared to 2-22 in St. Paul.
LAST MEETING WITH THE WARRIORS
In the season finale on Feb. 18, the Golden Bears fell just short in an 81-77 loss to the Warriors.
The Golden Bears were incredibly efficient in the second half shooting the ball, hitting 50-percent of their shots from the field (16-32) and from behind the arc (7-14). Winona State made up for it by shooting 61.5% from the field (16-26) and getting to the line, shooting 19 free throws and making 13. The trips to the charity stripe would be one of the biggest difference makers in the half and the game, as the Bears were only able to tally seven shots from the foul line, making six.
Antwan Kimmons led the way for the Bears in their final contest, picking up his fifth double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The CSP guard was 8-17 from the field (47.1%) and added three assists and a steal.
Marcus Skeete added nine points on 4-8 shooting from the field while pulling down four boards, with three assists, a block, and a steal.
TRUMAN STATE SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's meeting with Truman State, a member of the GLVC, will be the first meeting between the two schools on the court.
UPPER IOWA SERIES HISTORY
Sunday's foe will be a familiar one as Upper Iowa returns to St. Paul in their first season in the GLVC. The Golden Bears hold a record of 15-24 all-time against the Peacocks as UIU has won the last six in a row and 13 of the last 14 dating back to 2016. CSP has gone 6-13 in 19 meetings in St. Paul while they have picked up nine wins in 18 trips to Fayette.
LAST MEETING WITH THE PEACOCKS
In their last ever meeting in NSIC play on Feb. 16,
Antwan Kimmons set the CSP single-season scoring record in a massive 38 point performance in a 94-84 loss to Upper Iowa at Gangelhoff Center.
Kimmons set the Concordia single-season scoring record, and then some, with his career-high 38 points for a season total of 569. The 38 points is the most in a game since February 28, 2009 when Matt Cadwell poured in 46 at the Gangelhoff Center against Upper Iowa, just shy of 14 years ago. It's the second-most points in a single game in Concordia's Division II era (1999-present) and put him ahead of the former single-season record held by Bryndan Matthews in 2018-19 (546). Kimmons finished the hyper-efficient scoring night with his 38 points coming on 19 shots, hitting 14-19 from the floor, 9-14 from the stripe and 1-2 from three. He added eight rebounds and three assists in a game-high 38 minutes.
