ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Golden Bear women's basketball squad (2-1) defeated Maryville (1-2) 74-68 on Friday afternoon. Concordia-St. Paul controlled most of the game as they led for 36:53 compared to just 54 seconds for the Saints.
The game featured many back-and-forth long scoring runs. The Golden Bears started it off with a 17-5 run in the first quarter to take a 19-8 lead. Maryville would then score on back-to-back 3-pointers from Carsyn Fearday to cut the lead to five at the end of the first quarter.
After jumping out to a 27-17 lead in the second quarter, Maryville went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to two points at halftime. The Golden Bears were outscored 13-10 in the second quarter.
Fearday would hit another 3-pointer to give the Saints the lead at 30-29. It would be their last lead of the game as CSP would go on another run outscoring Maryville 15-2. The Saints wouldn't go away as CSP's 12-point lead was cut down to six at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was back-and-forth, and Maryville cut the lead to 65-63 with 1:45 left. Concordia would then make five straight free throws by Lindsey Becher, Mikayla Kanenwisher and Ally Gietzel to extend the lead to seven.
Maryville's Antoinette Mussorici hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 71-68 with 11 seconds left. After missing her first free throw, Gietzel would hit her next three to finish out the game.
Gietzel led the team with 22 points shooting 8-12 from the field. She was third on the team with six rebounds and she added an assist. Gietzel also was on the court for a team-high 39:19 in the game. Redshirt freshman forward Lauren Wilson tallied 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench. Becher scored 14 points as well with seven rebounds and three blocks.
Sophomore guard Leah Dengerud scored 10 points with a team-high three steals. Kanenwisher and Lauren Feddema tied for the team-high in assists with three each. Kanenwisher finished with seven points and a team-high +15 point differential when she was on the court.
The Golden Bears outscored Maryville 36-16 in the paint and 25-13 off of turnovers. Maryville had 21 turnovers compared to 17 by CSP. Concordia's bench also outscored Maryville's bench 18-4.
Fearday led Maryville's scorers with 19 points going 5-7 from behind the arc. Mussorici tallied 15 points with eight of them coming from the free throw line. Senior guard Haidyn Pitsch scored 14 points and guard Gracie Sturgart added 10 for the Saints.
The Golden Bears will be back in action on Saturday against Truman State. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Missouri.
