Concordia women defeated on the road Northern State 71-62

Golden Bears return home after 0-2 road weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (8-10, 5-9 NSIC) picked up their second loss of their weekend road trip, falling to Northern State (12-8, 7-7 NSIC) 71-52. It was the second win for NSU in as many nights, as they took down #12 Minnesota State 72-69 on Friday.

The Golden Bears struggled to get going from the field in the first quarter, going 3-for-11, while the Wolves were 8-of-15 from the field and 4-for-4 from the foul line. NSU forced five Concordia turnovers. Northern State would finish the quarter on a 11-4 run to take an early 21-12 lead into the second quarter.

Concordia continued their shooting slump in the second quarter, shooting 28.6-percent (4-14), and missing on all five attempts from behind the arc. The CSP defense picked up some of the slack, holding the Wolves to 16 points, thanks in part to four blocks as a team in the quarter. Even with the defensive effort, NSU was able to extend their lead to 37-23 at the half.

The CSP women snapped their recent streak of bad third quarters, out-scoring Northern State 19-18, and improving their shooting to 35-percent from the field (7-of-20) and 42.9-percent (3-of-7). Leah Dengerud led the team in the third, scoring nine points and hitting two 3-pointers, with the second one ending the scoring in the third quarter. Even with the offensive boost, NSU maintained their lead heading into the fourth quarter, 55-42.

The momentum built in the third quarter, as the Bears scored just 10 points in the fourth and were out-rebounded 13-5. NSU turned their poor third quarter shooting (29.4-percent) around in the fourth quarter, going 6-for-12 from the field and 2-of-5 from three, as the Wolves held possession and ran the clock down. The Wolves closed out the game on a 9-4 run to win 71-52.

Dengerud finished as the team's leading scorer with 14 points and filled up the stat sheet with three steals, two rebounds, and two blocks. The freshman guard has been a defensive asset and has started to get it going on the offensive side, setting her career high in scoring two nights in a row (13 points against the Dragons).

Ally Gietzel was 2-of-9 from the field (22.2-percent), but hit her only 3-point attempt and was 4-of-4 from the foul line. Sophomore center Makayla Johnson led the team in rebounds with a career high nine boards, while scoring two points and picking up a block.

As a team the Golden Bears led in points in the paint (24-22), and had nine steals leading to a 10-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Wolves were dominant in the paint in forcing tough shots and rejected 11 CSP shots. NSU was led by 6'4 center Kailee Oliverson who led all scorers with 22 points, adding eight rebounds, two blocks, an assist, and a steal.

The Golden Bears return home for their last regular season games against Northern Division teams next week with both at Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul. They take on Minot State on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and then host UMary on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.
