MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's basketball team (4-15, 2-11 NSIC) fell to #22 MSU Moorhead (16-3, 11-2 NSIC) on the road by a score of 90-64 on Friday night.
After an even start to the contest, MSUM pulled ahead late in the first half before extending their lead after the break. CSP fell to 13-23 in the all-time series as the Dragons won their fourth meeting in a row between the two schools.
While the Golden Bears have been the best team in the league forcing turnovers this season, the turnover battle went in the favor of MSU Moorhead on the night as MSUM turned 18 CSP turnovers in 23 points while Concordia finished with three points on seven Dragon turnovers. The Dragons added a 14-5 edge in second chance points as well as a 44-38 edge in points in the paint while the Golden Bears led the way with a 25-18 advantage in bench scoring.
Antwan Kimmons was one of three Golden Bears in double figures scoring as he led the squad with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. He was joined by
Ian Sluice and
Sean Mathieu, who each contributed 11 points, as Sluice hit three of four from deep and added three boards on the night.
Jared Perry added eight points off the bench as he connected on all four of his shot attempts.
Jacob Beeninga paced the Dragons with 31 points on 11-21 shooting to go along with four rebounds, three steals and two assists in the win. Jaden Stanley-Wiliams and Lorenzo McGhee added 16 points apiece in the contest.
The two teams jostled for the lead in the early going with seven lead changes over the first six minutes until a 10-2 run gave the Dragons a 20-14 advantage at the 12:17 mark of the first half. CSP responded with six of the next eight points to trim it back to two, but MSUM were right back on attack from there with eight in a row to extend it to double figures. Concordia had it back down to seven at 31-24 with 5:03 left in the half, but MSU Moorhead finished the half strong with a 14-3 burst to bring it to 45-27 heading into the break.
The first two points of the second half went to the Golden Bears as they trimmed it back to 16, but that would be all the closer they would get as the Dragons scored six straight points to put it out of reach. The lead grew to as many as 30 down the stretch before a pair of
Cal Greene dunks brought it to a final score of 90-64.
Concordia wraps up their road trip tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Northern State for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
