MOORHEAD, Minn. – The third-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (12-2, 5-1 NSIC) made it 13 straight set wins as they swept (25-13, 25-22, 25-7) MSU Moorhead (5-9, 2-4 NSIC) on the road on Saturday afternoon.
CSP extended their winning streak to five overall while winning their 19
th in a row against MSU Moorhead, improving to 34-8 in the all-time series.
It was a dominant all-around performance as the Golden Bears hit an impressive .324 with 44 kills while holding the Dragons to -.020 with 17 kills in the match. It marked the first time since Oct. 18, 2016 against Minnesota State that Concordia hit above .300 and held their opponent below .000 in the same match. The 17 kills allowed were also the fewest allowed since Rollins finished with just 13 back on Aug. 25, 2018.
CSP added a 63-43 advantage in digs as well as a 6.0-3.0 advantage in blocks in the win while both teams picked up three aces.
Teagan Starkey and
Jasmine Mulvihill each tallied double-doubles in the win as Starkey picked up her fourth with 39 assists and 13 digs while Mulvihill collected her fifth with a match-high 16 kills and 10 digs.
Ellie Sieling paced the squad with 14 digs while
Emma Schmidt chipped in seven kills and 13 digs on the afternoon.
Kora Kritzberger finished with six kills on 12 swings for a .500 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks in her two sets of play.
Concordia came out firing in the first set with eight of the first 10 points, but MSUM battled back to within two at 10-8. From there, it was all Golden Bears as they scored the next five in a row and 15 of the final 20 to roll to a 25-13 win in the opening set.
The Golden Bears opened the second set with a 5-2 run before maintaining a slim advantage for much of the rest of the set. With the margin at two at 16-14, CSP took control with a 6-1 burst to extend the lead to seven at 22-15. The Dragons battled back to within two at 23-21 and again at 24-22, but Mulvihill put it away with a kill to seal the 25-22 win.
Concordia wasted no time in putting it out of reach in the third as they scored the first 10 points of the set and 16 of the first 18 in a dominant effort. The lead grew to as many as 19 at 22-3 before the Golden Bears finished it off at 25-7. The seven points allowed were the fewest allowed in a set since taking set three 25-7 against New Haven in the national quarterfinal on Nov. 7, 2017.
The Golden Bears return to Gangelhoff Center for homecoming weekend next weekend as they host UMary on Friday night and Minot State on Saturday.
