CSP soccer hits the road this week to take on UMC and BSU

Kickoff against UMC set for Friday at 3 p.m. and BSU on Sunday at 1 p.m.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia- St. Paul women's soccer team (1-3-1, 1-1-0 NSIC) will hit the road this week for a two-game road stand against the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles on Friday at 3 p.m. and Bemidji State Beavers on Sunday at 1 p.m.

RECAP OF THE WEEK
The Golden Bears are coming off a 1-1 week that saw them fall in the conference opener to the Augustana Vikings and pick up their first win of the season against the Wayne State Wildcats.
 
On Friday night, the Golden Bears fell in the conference opener at home against the Augustana Vikings.
 
The Vikings were able to strike early in the first half with a goal in the 21st from Morgan Keirstead that was assisted by Kelly Kleekamp.
 
Corynn Grabau attempted to even the score a few minutes later with a pair of shots on goal that were collected by the Vikings' goalie.
 
The Golden Bears nearly broke the tie in the 53rd minute of the match with a shot from Haley Rudebusch that snuck into the right side of the goal, but it was called off due to the Golden Bears being offsides in the box.
 
The Vikings' defense stood tall for the remainder of the half, as they held on to win the match 1-0.
 
On Sunday afternoon, the Golden Bears pick up their first win of the season against the Wayne State Wildcats at Sea Foam Stadium.
 
The Wildcats were able to strike first in the contest with a goal from Haley Hoffman that was assisted by Cleo Johnson in the 26th minute.
 
After a shot by Sydney Manthana led to a corner kick in the 49th minute, freshman Jada Cannady scored the Golden Bears' first goal of the contest on a header off a corner kick by Harper Smoot.
 
The Golden Bears would break the tied in the 55th minute when Sophie Pawlyshyn was able to find the goal from a perfect pass from Katie Anderson to set up a one-on-one battle with the Wildcats' goalie.
 
The Golden Bears widened their lead to 3-1 in the 58th minute after Grabau scored the third goal of the match for CSP off an assist from Pawlyshyn.
 
Clare Snapko and Sammy Ponsonby each tested the Wildcat's keeper with shots on goal in the 70th and 71st minutes, and Abby Kloiber added the last shot on goal for the Golden Bears in the 77th minute.
 
Ashlyn Waldon played a huge part in the 3-1 victory with four saves in the game at Goalie for the Golden Bears.
 
SEASON LEADERS
Pawlyshyn leads the Golden Bears with four total points so far this season. The junior midfielder is currently second in the conference with a pair of assists and collected her first goal (game-winner) of the season last time out against Wayne State. She is currently second on the team with 10 shots (five on goal).

K. Anderson currently sits second on the team with three total points. The junior forward leads the team and is second in the NSIC with 25 shots (eight on goal). She has also scored a goal and collected an assist the last time out against Wayne State.
 
Grabau has two points on the season after scoring her first goal last time out against Wayne State. She has the best shot-on-goal percentage on the team, as four of her five shots this season have been on goal.
 
Cannady also has a pair of points for the Golden Bears. She scored her first career goal against Wayne State after connecting on one of her two shots in the match.
 
Waldon is currently ninth in the NSIC with 19 saves from her four starts in goal for the Golden Bears. She holds a 1-3 record and has a 1.25 goal against average.
 
Captain Tori Miller has seen the field the most for the Golden Bears this season with 425 total minutes. The junior defender has played the full 90 minutes in three of the five matches this season.
 
HISTORY BETWEEN CSP AND UMC
The two programs have met a total of 23 times dating back to October 10, 1999, and the Golden Bears hold a 15-6-2 all-time record against the Golden Eagles. UMC won the first two matchups against Concordia with a 2-0 victory in 1999 and a 1-0 victory in 2000. The Golden Bears won the following matchup and claimed their first win in the series in 2001 with a 3-0 victory. The longest winning streak in the series belongs to the Golden Bears, as they won five in a row from 2009-13 by outscoring the Golden Eagles 11-to-2 in that span. CSP has won the previous four matchups, including a 5-1 victory last season that saw both Nikki Anderson and Leah Engh each score a goal.
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Minnesota Crookston posted a 1-17 (1-13 NSIC) in the 2021 campaign and was picked to finish 16th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 19 total points.
 
The Golden Eagles are currently 1-4 (0-2 NSIC) this season after kicking off conference play a week ago.
 
UMC picked up their lone victory of the season by defeating the Waldorf Warriors 2-1 at home to kick off the season.
 
The Golden Eagles dropped their first game of the season on the road 1-0 to the Michigan Tech Huskies.
 
Their largest margin of defeat this season came against the Northern Michigan Wildcats, as they dropped the match 1-0 in Marquette, Mich.
 
They opened conference play against Minnesota State Moorhead with a 1-0 loss after giving up a penalty kick goal in the 32nd minute to the Dragons.
 
After three consecutive road matches, the Golden Eagles hosted the Northern State Wolves and dropped the match after giving up three first half goals plus an additional goal in the second half.
 
Alyssa Pavlacic is the player to watch for the Wolves. She has played the full 90 minutes for UMC in all five of their matches this season and scored the game-winner against Waldorf with her only attempt at goal this season.
 
HISTORY BETWEEN CSP AND BSU
The two programs have played a total of 25 times dating back to October 17, 1999, and the Beavers lead the series with a 9-14-2 record against the Golden Bears. BSU won the first match between the two schools by a score of 1-4 in Bemidji. Concordia was able to claim their first victory in the series in 2003 with 2-1 over the Beavers in St. Paul. The Golden Bears' longest winning streak in the series occurred from 2014-16, as CSP won each of the three matches by a score of 1-0. The Beavers have won the previous two matchups, which included a 2-1 victory in St. Paul during the regular season and a 1-0 victory at Bemidji in the NSIC Conference Tournament.
 
ABOUT THE BEAVERS
The Beavers are coming off an impressive 19-2-3 (13-0-2 NSIC) 2021 campaign that saw BSU finish the season as the NSIC Runner-Ups and advance to the third round of the NCAA Division II Central Region.
 
The Beavers are currently 3-1-1 (2-0-0 NSIC) this season and were picked to repeat as runners-up in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 210 total points.
 
The Beavers fell in their season opener on the road against the Division I South Dakota State Jackrabbits by a score of 3-0.
 
BSU bounced back with a 3-3 tie against the Northern Michigan Wildcats in Marquette, Mich.
 
The Beavers picked up their first win of the season on the road against Michigan Tech with a 1-0 victory over the Huskies to conclude non-conference play.
 
BSU opened conference play at home with a 1-0 victory over the Northern State Wolves, the game-winning goal coming at the 50th minute of the match.
 
Last time out the Beavers collected a 1-0 victory over the MSU Moorhead Dragons with a goal in the 54th minute to stay undefeated in conference play.
 
The Beavers will look to avenge their 2021 NSIC Championship loss before they face off with the Golden Bears, as they play host to the Minnesota State Mavericks on Friday at 3 p.m.
 
The player to watch for Bemidji State is senior forward Sara Wendt, who leads the team and is eighth in the NSIC with five points from two goals and an assist this season.
