Golden Bears edge Huskies in doubleheader sweep

Olson wins a pair for Golden Bears on the road

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (23-6-1, 6-4 NSIC) secured a pair of late-inning comeback wins on Saturday afternoon at St. Cloud State (20-11, 8-2 NSIC), winning game one 2-1 before a 4-3 win in game two. The two games were relocated from SCSU to the College of Saint Benedict.

Concordia remains on the road on Sunday for a noon doubleheader at Minnesota Duluth (21-10, 6-4 NSIC).

In a closely matched doubleheader, CSP snapped SCSU's 8-game winning streak with a pair of runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit, before a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh inning propelled Concordia to a 4-3 game two win.

Sophomore right handed pitcher Bryanna Olson went 2-0 in the doubleheader, striking out 14 batters in 10.1 innings, allowing just one run on six hits and two walks to improve to 15-3 on the year.

Senior catcher Amanda Parsons went 4-6 in the doubleheader, including a 3-3 effort in game two that featured two doubles and a triple as she has now reached base safely in 14 straight games.

GAME 1: CONCORDIA 2, SCSU 1
In the first game, the Huskies broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning on with a 1-out RBI bunt single.

The lead wouldn't last long, as Taylor Griffin reached on a 1-out single to right field, with Cam Veenbaas delivering an RBI double to left, scoring pinch runner Rachel Novak. Clara Heislen executed a sacrifice bunt to drive in Veenbaas as CSP scored its two runs in a string of three at bats.

Olson took it from there, as the fourth inning was the only frame that the Huskies produced multiple baserunners against her. She went the distance, striking out nine while scattering five singles with no walks allowed.

Veenbaas paced the lineup by going 1-2 with a run, RBI and a walk and Griffin also reached twice, going 1-2 with a walk in front of her.

GAME 2: CONCORDIA 4, SCSU 3
In game two, it was Concordia who scored first as Clara Heislen led off the game with a double, moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on Grace Beseman's sacrifice fly.

It was the start of a game in which the teams traded runs, with SCSU tying the game in the second before Amanda Parsons delivered an RBI triple to right center field in the third to reclaim the lead, scoring Halle Bemmels.

The Huskies claimed their first lead of the game in the fourth, with a 2-out rally producing a pair of runs for a 3-2 lead, finally getting to starting pitcher Kristi Pilz, who had allowed an unearned run in the second inning before a 1-2-3 third and retiring the first two batters of the fourth inning.

Pilz finished the game allowing three runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings in a no decision, scattering six hits while inducing six ground ball outs with a strikeout on just 62 pitches.

After Olson slammed the door with a strikeout to end the fourth inning, Heislen provided the power for CSP by leading off the top of the fifth inning with a game-tying homer to center field.

In the seventh, a 1-out double to left field by Grace Beseman forced the Huskies to pitch around Parsons, who had doubled twice and hit an RBI triple in first three times at the plate, drawing an intentional walk. Alexus Houston followed with a run-scoring single to right center, bringing home Beseman for the 4-3 lead.

A leadoff single by the Huskies in the bottom of the inning was followed by a sacrifice bunt to put the tying run in scoring position, but working with the free out, Olson secured a key strikeout for the second out before a ground out to second base ended the game.

In game two, Olson worked 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts for the relief win.

The Golden Bears had 10 hits against three SCSU pitchers including seven for extra bases. Heislen was 2-4 with a double, her eighth homer and two runs scored. The double was her ninth, while Parsons matched her nine doubles with a pair in the game, adding her first triple of the year. Sydney Pelzer also a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with her sixth double of the season.
