LAST TIME OUT
On Monday, the Golden Bears closed out the weekend series with a 12-3 loss to #10 Augustana at Karras Park.

On a cold and windy afternoon, the Vikings jumped out to an 8-0 lead with three in the first and five in the third before the Golden Bears answered with three of their own in the bottom half of the third to claw their way back in it. That would be all the closer they would get as Augie tacked on a few insurance runs to bring it to a 12-3 final.

Concordia's offensive output all came in the third as Justin McGuigan, who also singled in the seventh, drew a leadoff walk before an error and a Brayden Roybal single loaded the bases with one out. Kal Brohmer drove in the team's first run before Jarod Wandersee tallied his 100th career hit, a two-run double to the left center gap.

Nick Thimsen added a single in the fifth and Matt Pietsch added one in the sixth while Jaden Werner added a walk in the loss.

Korey Dahlberg (4-3) threw the first 2.2 innings for the Golden Bears as he struck out three in the loss. Michael Voss followed with 2.1 shutout frames, scattering a hit and a pair of walks while striking out two. Alec Holcomb worked the next 2.0 innings before Wyatt Rudolf came on for 1.1 innings and Ryan Fering grabbed the final two outs.

WAYNE STATE SERIES HISTORY
Concordia heads to Wayne State with a record of 15-34 all-time against the Wildcats. WSC dominated the series from 2000-12 with a record of 33-7 during that span. CSP managed to win back-to-back games just once, taking two in a row in 2008, through the first 40 meetings. The Golden Bears have shifted the momentum in recent years as they have won eight of nine meetings since 2015. Concordia and Wayne State will be meeting for the first time since 2019. In 28 contests in Wayne, CSP has gone 10-20.

LAST MEETING WITH THE WILDCATS
With the COVID pandemic resulting in the cancelation of their scheduled series in the past two season, the two schools will be meeting for the first time in just over three years.

Back on Apr. 24, 2019, CSP picked up a doubleheader split on the road at Wayne State as they grabbed a 9-1 game one win before dropping game two 11-0 in seven innings.

After a quiet start to the day, Concordia's bats exploded for nine runs over the final five innings, scoring at least two runs in four different innings, to roll to a comfortable win in the first game of the day.

Concordia saw production from up and down the lineup with eight different players collecting hits, seven different players scoring runs and six different players driving in runs in the win. Ben Suits helped lead the way by reached base safely three times, going 2-3 with a double and three RBIs. Carter Schmidt added a three-hit day with a pair of runs scored as well while Patrick Bordewick drove in two with a triple. Isaac Hormann and Jarod Wandersee each added a run scored and an RBI in the contest.

The offensive outburst was more than enough for Louie Varland as the junior right-hander shut down the Wildcats in the win. Varland worked a complete game victory with just one run and five hits allowed and nine strikeouts in his 7.0 innings of work. The nine strikeout performance was his third of the year and fifth with eight or more.
