SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (15-22, 9-16 NSIC) fell to #10 Augustana (33-7-1, 23-4 NSIC) twice on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Bears dropped game one 11-2 and game two 10-0 in seven innings in game two.
GAME ONE: Augustana 11, Concordia-St. Paul 2
In the first game of the series, the Vikings jumped ahead early with two runs in the first and five more in the third to build the decisive advantage against the Golden Bears.
Justin McGuigan provided a bright spot for Concordia as he launched a two-run home run in the fifth, his first of his career, to account for both of the team's runs in the game.
Kal Brohmer chipped in two of the team's six hits in the contest, his second multi-hit game in the past three, as he doubled and drew a walk in the loss.
Jarod Wandersee added his 99
th career hit to go along with a walk while
Bryce Nelson singled and scored a run.
Luke DeGrammont (3-3) was tagged with the loss as he struck out a pair and gave up seven earned runs over his 4.2 innings of work.
Gavin Rusch followed with 2.1 innings of two-run ball, walking one and striking out a pair.
Augie's Tanner Brown (6-0) remained unbeaten as he worked 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight. Kai Taylor finished off the win with 2.0 hitless innings, striking out three.
GAME TWO: Augustana 10, Concordia 0 (7 inn.)
The Vikings carried the momentum into the second game of the day as they scored at least two runs in four of the first five innings to cruise to a run-rule victory.
Augustana starter Ryan Jares (5-2) delivered a two-hit shutout as he walked none and struck out 10 in a dominant performance for the Vikings.
Mason Wolf broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the sixth before
Mason Nadolney added a second hit with a pinch-hit single to start the seventh.
Jonah Lewis (1-5) took the loss for the Golden Bears as he worked the first 4.0 innings before handing it off to the bullpen.
Reece Piontek did not allow an earned run in his 1.0 inning of action before
Eric Lundell scattered three hits and a run over 2.0 frames, walking none and striking out one.
Ben Ihrke led the way for the Augustana offense as he collected four hits in four trips, driving in two and scoring two more in the win.
Concordia and Augustana will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a noon first pitch in game three.
