Parsons delivers walk-off to secure a senior day sweep in home opener

The senior catcher went 7-8 to propel the Golden Bears to a pair of wins

ST. PAUL, Minn. - On a humid day that featured morning and early evening thunderstorms, it was the thunder from Amanda Parsons' bat that stole the show in between as the senior catcher went 7-8 at the plate including a game two walk-off home run to deliver a senior day sweep for Concordia-St. Paul (28-11-1, 11-9 NSIC) over MSU Moorhead (6-30, 3-17 NSIC) on home opening weekend at Carlander Field on Saturday.

Parsons went 4-4 with three RBIs and a run in a 9-4 game one victory before going 3-4, scoring twice including the game-ending homer to break a 5-5 tie for a 6-5 win. Following the big day, she's hitting .463 on the season while pushing her on base percentage above .500 (.518).

Freshman left handed pitcher Erica McCullough earned the win in relief in both games, combining to pitch 8.0 innings while allowing one run on eight hits (all singles) while only issuing two walks to improve to 7-5 with a 3.68 ERA on the year.

The Golden Bears didn't experience any weather delays despite the day starting and ending with thunderstorms, and they'll return home for a noon doubleheader on Sunday against Northern State (11-31, 3-17 NSIC).

GAME 1: CSP 9, MSUM 4
In the first game, the teams traded jabs through the early innings, with the Dragons scoring one run in each of the first, second and third innings while the Golden Bears kept pace with a run in the first before adding three runs in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead after a scoreless second frame. Parsons had an RBI single in the first and third innings, and Taylor Griffin added a single to right field in the third, as well.

With McCullough taking the circle and working out of the third inning only allowing an inherited run to score, she would work the rest of the contest, scatting seven hits without issuing any walks. She allowed one run to score in the fifth inning to make it a 5-4 CSP lead, but the Golden Bear bats put the game away in the bottom of the inning with four more runs including a 2-run home run by Clara Heislen, her 12th of the year followed by Alexus Houston's seventh home run, a laser over the fence in left center.

Heislen went 2-3, scoring three and driving in two while adding her 11th steal from the leadoff spot, and was followed by Alexus Houston who went 3-4 with two runs and her seventh homer of the season.

The seniors had a strong game one performance, as Emma Lero went 2-4 and is now hitting .357 on the year while Cam Veenbaas went 1-2 with an RBI.

GAME 2: CSP 6, MSUM 5
Concordia jumped out to the early lead in game two when designated player Avery Johnson hit her first career home run in the second inning, a 2-run shot for a 2-0 lead. She went 2-3 in the game and finished with three RBIs and is now hitting .367 on the year.

The Dragons worked their way back into the game with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead before Johnson delivered an RBI single to score Amanda Parsons to tie the game back up 3-3.

MSU Moorhead added two more runs in the fourth before Concordia matched them and tied the game for the second straight inning with a 2-out rally sparked by Sydney Pelzer's 2-run game-tying single to left field.

With McCullough now in, the Dragons weren't able to string together a rally against the rookie southpaw as she allowed just one single and a pair of walks across three shutout innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Parsons delivered the game-winning blast to left field on a 3-1 pitch to secure the victory, going 3-4 at the plate in the game.

Joining Parsons and Johnson with multi-hit games in the second game was Cam Veenbaas, who went 2-3 and finished the doubleheader 3-5 at the plate while Pelzer's two RBIs give her a team-high 33 on the season.
