ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (15-20, 9-14 NSIC) and #10 Augustana (31-7-1, 21-4 NSIC) have announced that this weekend's series has reversed sites to Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. and has been moved to Sunday and Monday.
SCHEDULE INFORMATION
With unplayable field conditions in St. Paul, the decision was made to move the three-game series to the campus of Augustana. First pitch in Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. while Monday's nine-inning contest will begin at noon.
LAST TIME OUT
On Tuesday afternoon in Mankato, CSP saw their game one comeback fall just short as #8 Minnesota State held on for a 6-4 win in the first game of the day before the Mavericks completed the doubleheader sweep with an 11-0 win in seven innings in game two.
After the Mavericks scored in each of the first three innings in the first game of the day, the Golden Bears nearly erased a 6-0 deficit in the seventh as they scored four times and brought the tying run to the plate with nobody out before MSU slowed the momentum to preserve the victory.
With the bases loaded and nobody out in the game's final frame,
Bryce Nelson put CSP on the scoreboard with an RBI single, his third hit of the game, before
Justin McGuigan was hit by a pitch to trim it to four with nobody out. Back-to-back RBI groundouts off the bats of
Nick Thimsen and
Brayden Roybal further trimmed the gap to two at 6-4, but Jack Brown coaxed a third consecutive groundout to preserve the save.
Nelson and Roybal were a big part of the offense in the contest as Nelson went 3-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored while Roybal finished 2-4 with a double and a run driven in, giving the infield duo five of the team's seven hits.
Jack Young and
Jaden Werner each chipped in a single and a run scored in the game.
AUGIE SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears head into this weekend's series with a record of 5-32 against the Vikings. CSP's wins have been split fairly evenly over the all-time series with Augie as they have tallied wins in 2009, 2011, two in 2016 and one in 2019. Augustana has won 14 of the last 15, including three in the NSIC Tournament. The two schools have met 12 times in Sioux Falls with Concordia going 3-9 in those meetings.
LAST MEETING WITH THE VIKINGS
Back on April 18, 2021, Concordia dropped the final game of the series to Augustana by a score of 9-0.
For the third game in a row, the Vikings put a crooked number on the board in the opening frame before coming out on top. They scored four in the first, three in the third and two in the second while a quartet of pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts in the shutout win.
Max Steffens tallied the victory for Augustana as he working 5.0 scoreless frames, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out five. Parker Hanson added five strikeouts in 2.0 innings, Tony Lanier struck out all three batters he faced, and Caleb Saari struck out a pair in the ninth to round it out.
Matt Pietsch led the team with a pair of hits in the loss while
Jarod Wandersee,
Nick Thimsen,
Shea Pekarek and
Jack Becker all added singles as well.
The bullpen provided a bright spot for the Golden Bears as
Eric Lundell,
Wyatt Rudolf and
Ray Wellner combined to blank the Vikings for the 4.1 innings. Lundell allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings of work, Rudolf struck out a pair in a scoreless inning, and Wellner added 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Michael Voss took the loss as he worked 3.2 innings in the start.
