Golden Bear pitchers produce back-to-back 4-hitters in sweep

Concordia tops Wayne State 4-1 and 3-0 on Saturday in Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. - Behind a pair of strong performances in the circle, Concordia-St. Paul softball (19-4-1, 2-2 NSIC) secured its first two NSIC wins of the season, sweeping Wayne State (3-22, 0-4 NSIC) on Saturday at the Maverick All-Sports Dome on the campus of Minnesota State University.

Sophomore right handed pitchers Bryanna Olson (12-2) and Kristi Pilz (4-0) each went the distance, scattering four Wayne State singles in each game while Concordia's bats did just enough to pick up a pair of wins, combining for five doubles by four different players in the doubleheader and going 3-3 stealing bases.

Concordia returns to the Maverick All-Sports Dome on Sunday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader against #7 Augustana, who split against #15 Minnesota State at the Maverick All-Sports Dome.

GAME 1: CSP 4, WSC 1
A 3-run third inning by Concordia provided sophomore Bryanna Olson all the run support she would need, starting with an RBI single through the left side by senior catcher Amanda Parsons, scoring Clara Heislen, who led off the inning with a single and stolen base. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Sydney Pelzer added an RBI single up the middle, scoring Alexus Houston and CSP scored its third run on a dropped third strike.

Olson took it from there. After a bumpy third inning in which Wayne State loaded the bases with two outs, including a dropped third strike with two runners on, Olson put down 10 Wildcats in order and carried a 1-hitter into the sixth inning.

She allowed an unearned run in the sixth as she lowered her season ERA to 1.50, striking out nine across seven innings with four hits and two walks.

Heislen was 2-4 with a pair of runs scored, a stolen base and a double, with Houston following her with a pair of walks in front of Grace Beseman, who was 1-3 with a double and a walk.

GAME 2: CSP 3, WSC 0
The two teams each carried no-hitters into the fourth inning, and while Wayne State tacked on the first two hits of the day with two outs in the fourth inning, the Golden Bears were able to tack two runs on the scoreboard in the home half of the fourth.

With one out, Alexus Houston and Sydney Pelzer cracked back-to-back doubles, with Pelzer driving in Houston and Clara Heislen added a two-out RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, Pelzer delivered her second double of the game and scored on Taylor Griffin's sacrifice squeeze bunt, adding an insurance run.

Kristi Pilz didn't need the insurance, cruising to the shutout win on just 77 pitches, inducing soft contact with middle infielders Griffin and Pelzer racking up 10 assists in the game, seven coming to the shortstop Griffin. WSC had just four singles and a walk against Pilz, who struck out a pair in her first career complete game shutout.

Pelzer was 2-3 with two doubles, a run and an RBI to lead the offense.
