Golden Bears split with Golden Eagles in Mankato

CSP drops extra inning contest in game one before a run-rule bounce back in game two

MANKATO, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (25-10-1, 8-8 NSIC) drew a split with Minnesota Crookston (13-28, 4-12 NSIC) on Saturday at the Maverick All-Sports Dome on the campus of Minnesota State University. CSP dropped game one 15-6 in 10 innings before bouncing back for a 9-1 win in six innings in game two.

It was the second straight extra inning game for Concordia, who won a 13-inning game against Bemidji State just one day earlier as CSP played 23 innings in two games. The Golden Eagles took advantage of CSP's extra inning fatigue by dropping nine runs in the 10th to snap the Golden Bears' 39 game winning streak in the series spanning 20 years.

The game two win featured Concordia holding a 14-3 advantage in hits, setting the tone early with a Clara Heislen leadoff home run.

The Golden Bears hit the road for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, April 20 at Southwest Minnesota State at 2 p.m. and are scheduled to host MSU Moorhead and Northern State next Saturday and Sunday for their delayed home opening weekend at Carlander Field.

GAME 1: UMC 15, CSP 6 (10 innings)
Concordia grabbed the early lead, starting when Taylor Griffin doubled to left center to give Concordia runners on second and third with two outs. A walk to Cam Veenbaas loaded the bases, with the Golden Bears scoring three runs on Clara Heislen's two-base error. Heislen swiped third and scored on UMC's second error of the inning for a 4-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles flipped things in the fourth, using a 4-1 inning to tie the game at 5-5 before reclaiming the lead 6-5 in the top of the fifth.

In the sixth, Alexus Houston tripled to the right field corner with one out, and scored on a wild pitch with two outs to tie the game 6-6.

Erica McCullough provided a boost for Concordia's bullpen, recording 12 straight outs after allowing the fifth inning run when she issued a 1-out walk in the ninth inning, retiring the next two batters to keep her scoreless string going.

But the Golden Bears couldn't scratch a run across in the meantime, hitting into a pair of double plays, one in the seventh and another in the ninth.

McCullough would end up being charged with the loss, falling to 4-5 on the year after working 6.1 innings in relief with seven strikeouts.

The Golden Bears finished the game with 12 hits, but only had one RBI on their six runs and left 11 runners on base in the game.

Heislen went 2-4 with her 10th stolen base and Avery Johnson went 2-2 in a reserve role, entering as a pinch runner and delivering hits in her two at bats.

GAME 2: CSP 9, UMC 1 (6 innings)
In game two, Concordia came out energized, as Kristi Pilz retired the first three batters on nine pitches, setting the table for the lineup.

Clara Heislen wasted no time in setting the tone, taking a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right center, her 10th homer of the year. Alexus Houston followed suit, working the count before hitting the sixth pitch to center for a single.

Houston promptly stole second, and with one out stole third and scored on the throwing error on the play for a 2-0 lead, giving her 10 stolen bases on the season.

Pilz continued to put-up zeroes, turning UMC down without a hit for the first three innings with no one advancing past first base.

Concordia tacked on three more runs in the third as Alexus Houston tripled to right field and was driven home by Grace Beseman's double to left field. Sydney Pelzer added an RBI single and Jacey Defries an RBI double in the big inning.

The Golden Eagles finally got to Pilz in the fourth with a 2-out RBI single before Concordia threw out the trailing runner in a rundown.

Amanda Parsons added an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to keep the 5-run lead.

Pilz put the Golden Eagles down in order in the fifth and sixth innings to finish the game allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks. She improves to 6-0 on the year, lowering her ERA to 1.66 and needed just 68 pitches.

In the bottom of the sixth, Concordia turned to its bench to put the game away, starting with a walk to Halle Bemmels and an infield single by Afton Zemke. After Grace Beseman hit into a fielder's choice, Danni Sharum singled in a run. Pelzer added another RBI double before Morgan Medlo picked a spot to get her first career hit, the walk-off RBI single to right field.

Four Golden Bears had 2-hit games in the win: Heislen (2-3), Houston (2-3), Pelzer (2-4) and Defries (2-2) as 10 different Golden Bears had hits while nine different players either scored or drove in a run.
