RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (15-15, 9-9 NSIC) dropped a pair of contests to Minot State (19-13, 13-4 NSIC) at First National Bank of River Falls Field on Wednesday morning. The Beavers took game one 21-2 and game two 16-3.
Concordia will return to action on Friday and Saturday as they travel to Brandon, S.D. to take on Sioux Falls.
GAME ONE: Minot State 21, Concordia-St. Paul 2
Concordia found themselves in a deep early hole with Minot State scoring 11 runs in the first before rolling to a comfortable victory as they scored at least two runs in each of the first five innings of the game.
CSP had five different players collect hits in the game as
Jarod Wandersee and
Mitch Klass each doubled in the contest.
Justin McGuigan and
Nick Thimsen each reached safely twice as McGuigan went 1-2 with an RBI and a walk and Thimsen drew a pair of walks.
Kal Brohmer and
Lamine Diaby-Gassama each added a hit apiece as well.
On the other side, Minot State had nine extra-base hits, including five homers, among their 19 hits in the game.
Reece Piontenk (2-1) took the loss as he worked 0.2 innings in the start.
David Salz provided a bright spot on the mound as he made his Golden Bear debut, delivering a scoreless sixth.
GAME TWO: Minot State 16, Concordia-St. Paul 3
It was Golden Bears that struck first in game two with a solo home run off the bat of
Jaden Werner in the top of the third, but the Beavers got the bats going again with four in their half of the fifth before putting it out of reach with their second 11-run inning of the day in the sixth to secure the sweep.
Werner's homer was one of the team's five hits in the game as
Brayden Roybal and
Shea Pekarek each doubled while Wandersee and
Michael Sturek added singles. Pekarek and Wandersee each drove in runs as Wandersee extended his on-base streak to 12.
Mason Nadolney (0-1) made his first start of the season as he took the loss after working the first 2.2 innings.
Matt Sherman added 1.2 innings of one-hit ball, striking out two and walking none, while
Gavin Lund retired the only batter he faced.
Minot State added 15 more hits in game two to bring their total to 37 runs on 34 hits on the day.
