WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (3-5) dropped Wednesday's contest at #14 Rollins (17-2) by a score of 6-0 as the two schools sat through a lightning delay of over an hour.
The Golden Bears dropped to 2-2 on the trip as they ran into a tough Tars squad. The Golden Bears put runners on base in six of the first seven innings, including loading the bases in the fourth and the sixth, but they were unable to pick up the big hit as they were blanked on the afternoon.
Mason Wolf was the lone CSP hitter to collect a pair of hits as he finished 2-4 with a double to bump his slash line up to .444/.545/.889 in limited action this season.
Brayden Roybal reached safely in three of four plate appearances, singling and drawing two walks while also stealing a base.
Matt Pietsch chipped in a single and a walk while
Shea Pekarek added a single of his own.
On the mound,
Gavin Rusch (0-1) saw his first career start cut short as he worked the first 2.2 innings before departing after the lightning delay. Rusch took the loss as he allowed two earned runs and struck out two on the day.
Gavin Lund provided 2.1 shutout frames in relief as he limited the Tars to one hit while striking out one.
Mason Nadolney added 1.2 innings of one-run ball with no walks and a strikeout while
Carter Schulte and
Ryan Fering combined for a scoreless eighth.
The Tars used four different pitchers in the combined shutout as Ray Zhang (1-0) picked up the win with 3.0 scoreless innings and five strikeouts in the committee game. Cameron Sorge added 2.1 scoreless innings and Justin Driscoll worked 2.2 hitless frames before Steven Swift finished it off with a scoreless ninth.
Rollins jumped ahead early with two in the first before adding another in the third before the delay. They doubled the lead in the later innings as they tacked on two in the sixth and another in the seventh to bring it to the final score of 6-0.
Concordia will look to get back in the win column on Thursday morning at Chain O' Lakes Stadium as they take on West Virginia Wesleyan at 11:30 a.m.
