WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Concordia-St. Paul softball (9-1) extended its early season winning streak to nine games on Monday afternoon, topping Ashland University (3-3) in a 2-0 at DiamondPlex Field 4. The second game of the day against Concord to be played immediately following was canceled due to rain.
The Golden Bears are off to their best start since their first year of NCAA Division II softball in the 2000 season, which coincidentally started with a loss by three runs or less in the season opener and was followed by nine consecutive wins. That season, the first in the "Golden Bear" era, Concordia finished 35-14-1 and posted a 15-9 record in the Northern Sun.
Concordia has Tuesday off, returning to Winter Haven's DiamondPlex on Wednesday morning against West Virginia Wesleyan at 9 a.m. on field three and Lewis at 11:15 a.m. (central time) on field four.
Sophomore right handed pitcher
Bryanna Olson pitched her third shutout of the season, improving to 7-1 with a 0.73 earned run averaged in 48 innings in nine appearances (seven starts). She allowed just two hits and two walks across her seven innings, striking out six.
Olson has pitched 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings in the circle for the Golden Bears, issuing just 10 hits in the process.
Today, she retired 10 batters in a row from the third to the sixth innings and only allowed one baserunner to reach second base, a two out double in the first inning.
Concordia didn't waste time giving her the lead to win her fifth consecutive start, either. In the bottom of the first inning, CSP manufactured a run following
Halle Bemmels' one out single, coming around to score on a two base throwing error on the next at bat.
Concordia held firm on its one run lead behind Olson, finally padding it in the sixth inning as
Amanda Parsons hit a leadoff double, with pinch runner
Avery Johnson coming around to score on
Alexus Houston's ground out following Johnson stealing third base.
Josie Duncan took the loss for Ashland, allowing two runs (one earned) in six innings, issuing five hits and a walk to CSP.
