LAST TIME OUT
On Sunday, the Golden Bears capped off an impressive week with a 2-1 win over Bemidji State as they claimed an NSIC-opening weekend sweep and extended their winning streak to five.
The Golden Bears claimed their first weekend sweep in NSIC play since taking a four-game set against Minnesota Duluth in Superior, Wis. back on March 31-April 1, 2019. CSP also made it 16 wins in the past 17 meetings with the Beavers as they improved to 46-25 in the all-time series.
Concordia's pitching staff continued to baffle the BSU hitters as
Korey Dahlberg,
Wyatt Rudolf and
Alec Holcomb combined to allow just one run on four hits in what proved to be a pitcher's duel in the series finale. Dahlberg (2-0) made it two wins in as many starts as he limited the Beavers to a run on two hits in his 5.0 innings in the start, striking out a pair.
Wyatt Rudolf extended his scoreless inning streak to 9.2 as he lowered his season ERA to 2.08 with 2.2 scoreless frames in relief. The right-hander allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one.
Alec Holcomb preserved the Golden Bear lead as he stranded the bases loaded in the top of the eighth with an inning-ending fielder's choice before working around a pair of hit batters in the ninth to lock down his third save of the year.
On the weekend, CSP's six pitchers, led by
Luke DeGrammont's three-hit shutout in game one, held Bemidji State to just three runs and 14 hits while walking six and striking out 26 in 25.0 innings, tallying a 1.08 ERA and a .179 opponent average in a dominant effort.
At the plate in game three,
Jaden Werner and
Matt Pietsch each reached safely three times as Werner went 2-2 with a walk and an RBI single while Pietsch went 2-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.
Jack Young added the team's other hit as he went 1-4 on the day.
NSU SERIES HISTORY
The all-time series between the Golden Bears and the Wolves has been an extensive one as the two schools have previously met 65 times. In those meetings, CSP has gone 48-17, including 41 of 48 from 2000-12. Since then, the series has shifted more towards NSU in recent years with the Wolves holding an 11-7 edge in the past 18 meetings. In 17 neutral site meetings in the series, Northern State holds a 9-8 advantage.
LAST MEETING WITH THE WOLVES
Back on Mar. 28, 2021, CSP was swept by Northern State in three games at Veterans Field. The Wolves took game one 5-3, game two 1-0 and game three 3-0.
17 hours and eight minutes after the first pitch of the first game of the series, the two teams resumed play on Sunday morning. It was the Wolves that struck first with two runs in the third before Concordia came storming back with three in the fourth. That lead would not last, however, as NSU gained the decisive advantage with three in the sixth to claim a 5-3 win.
Griffin Lapp pitched well in a no-decision as he allowed just two runs on four hits in 4.2 innings while striking out three and walking two.
Connor Hurley took the loss in relief as he worked a third of an inning before
TJ Johnson delivered 2.0 shutout innings with a strikeout.
Jarod Wandersee collected two of the team's four hits, including an RBI double, while scoring a run as well.
Patrick Bordewick added a hit, a walk and a run scored while
Ryan Christopher added a single.
Offense proved to be hard to come by in the second game of the day as the two teams combined for just a single run on nine hits in seven innings of action. The Wolves broke the scoreless tie with a run in the fifth and that proved to be all they needed as they grabbed a second win.
Senior
Luke DeGrammont made life difficult for the NSU hitters as he scattered five hits over 6.0 innings of one-run ball in a tough luck loss. He struck out one and walked one in the outing.
Jonah Lewis struck out three of the four hitters he faced in a scoreless seventh.
Northern State starter Seth Brewer was also extremely effective as he allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out five in 5.0 shutout innings for the win. Mike Stubbs came on in relief to deliver 2.0 shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts to pick up the save.
In the final game of the day, NSU starter Zach Hrvol (1-2) came within four outs of a no-hitter as he threw a one-hit complete game shutout, allowing just two over the minimum in the win.
Michael Voss nearly matched him pitch-for-pitch in a game that took just 1:17 to complete. Voss (0-1) allowed no earned runs on four hits in 6.0 innings, striking out a pair.
Ryan Fering added a 1-2-3 seventh.
Nick Thimsen broke up the no-no with a double in the sixth while
Matt Pietsch was hit by a pitch in the fourth.
UMC SERIES HISTORY
CSP will look to continue their dominance of UMC in the all-time series as they have gone 47-12 in 59 previous meetings. The Golden Bears had been especially dominant in recent years with 43 wins in a row against the Golden Eagles from 2003 to 2019, but the Golden Eagles have won seven of the last eight. Concordia has gone 10-5 in 15 meetings at a neutral site.
LAST MEETING WITH THE GOLDEN EAGLES
In last year's four game series between the two schools at UMC Baseball Field back on Apr. 11-12, 2021, Minnesota Crookston took three of four.
In game three of the series after the teams traded the lead back and forth early in the contest, the CSP bats came through in the seventh as they scored six runs to claim the decisive advantage in the third and final conference game of the series.
The Golden Bears took advantage of their opportunities at the plate as they needed just seven hits to score nine runs in the victory. The team's patience at the plate played a big role as they drew nine walks to aid the offensive effort.
Senior shortstop
Patrick Bordewick had a big game at the plate as he went 2-4 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored while
Matt Pietsch picked up a hit and a walk while scoring three times.
Ryan Christopher and
Jarod Wandersee each reached base safely three times in the game as Christopher finished 2-4 with a walk and run scored while Wandersee walked three times, scored once and drove in another.
Ryan Bastyr added a two-run single while Thimsen chipped in an RBI single of his own.
CSP starter
Michael Voss was solid on the hill as he limited Minnesota Crookston to just four hits and two runs over 5.0 innings while striking out four in a no-decision.
TJ Johnson picked up the win as he allowed one run on no hits in his inning in relief before
Connor Hurley finished it off with 3.0 innings of one-run ball and four strikeouts to grab his second save of the year.
In the series finale, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with four in the first and two in the second and didn't look back as CSP was held to three hits in the 6-1 loss.
The trio of
Ray Wellner,
Logan Shaffer and
Ryan Fering provided a bright spot for the Golden Bears as they combined for 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three.
Wyatt Rudolf got the start and was tagged with the loss as he gave up four runs in the first.
Shea Pekarek,
Ryan Christopher and
Patrick Bordewick picked up the team's three hits as Pekarek also drew a walk and scored the lone run for the squad in the game.
