Golden Bears stay hot with a Thursday sweep

CSP produces two more shutouts, Heislen adds three extra base hits

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Concordia-St. Paul softball (12-1) continued its early season surge with two more wins on Thursday as part of THE Spring Games played at Auburndale Softball Complex, extending its winning streak to 12 games.

Concordia also posted two more shutouts, a 4-0 early afternoon win over Walsh (2-5) before a 10-0 run-rule win over Edinboro (1-6) in five frames.

The Golden Bears return to the Auburndale Complex on Saturday with a pair of games against a pair of Division II opponents from Michigan, Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State. CSP is also working towards scheduling a time to complete the suspended game against West Virginia Wesleyan.

Concordia center fielder and leadoff hitter Clara Heislen had a big afternoon at the plate, going 4-7 with two runs, three RBIs, two doubles, a home run and a walk in the doubleheader. She had two hits in each game, hitting two doubles against Walsh, and adding a homer against Edinboro.

With two more shutouts, Concordia now has six team shutouts on the season and allowed just one run in the last six games, a solo homer against Lewis on Wednesday.

GAME 1: CSP 4, Walsh 0
In the first game of the day, Concordia scored two runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by Grace Beseman and Sydney Pelzer for the early lead, with the runs being enough behind the red hot pitching staff.

Kristi Pilz earned the start for the Golden Bears and took charge with the lead, allowing only one base runner to reach second base, a leadoff double in the second inning who was retired on a flyout double play by the next batter.

She finished the game working 5.1 innings, allowing four hits with three strikeouts and no walks to improve to 2-0 on the year.

She was relieved by Bryanna Olson with a runner on first base (reached on error) and one out in the sixth inning. Olson retired the first two batters she faced, and pitched out of a first-and-third with one out jam in the seventh for her second save of the year.

Concordia added to its lead in the fourth inning with a two-out RBI double by Clara Heislen, and a squeeze bunt by Pelzer in the seventh to score Beseman from third base for a 4-0 lead.

Beseman went 2-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk and Amanda Parsons also went 2-3 with a double. Pelzer was 1-3 with two RBIs.

GAME 2: CSP 10, Edinboro 0 (5 innings)
In game two, Concordia once again jumped out to the early lead in the first inning, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first as the first three batters reached to load the bases. Jacey Defries followed with a two-run double down the left field line, with Danni Sharum and Sydney Pelzer adding RBI singles before a Taylor Griffin sacrifice fly.

It was more than enough for Erica McCullough, who scattered six baserunners on five hits and a walk across her 5.0 shutout frames. She struck out a career-high seven batters to earn the win, improving to 2-0 with her first career shutout.

The first inning set the tone, as five different players had 2-hit performances led by Defries who was 2-2 with a double and three RBIs. Heislen was 2-3 with two runs, a walk and a two-run homer in the third inning or an 8-0 lead. Alexus Houston went 2-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base and Danni Sharum was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Pelzer went 2-3 and drove in two more runs, giving her two RBIs in three straight games and in five of the last six. She leads the team with 13 RBIs on the year.

Through 13 completed games on the year, four Golden Bears have at least a .500 on base percentage and a .600-plus slugging percentage: Beseman (.532/.650), Parsons (.568/.686), Houston (.500/.667) and Heislen (.500/.625).
